TOPIC: Holsclaw D1475 rebuild

I started tearing stuff apart tonight, took a bunch of photos, straightened some metal, started thinking about how I want to do this. I think I'll attack this mostly flat metal with a coarse grit belt sander, clean it well and use a rustoleum primer. I want to use rustoleum paints on it just because I've had such great results over the years with them.

I may put this off a bit. There's a chance I might sign up for an auto body repair course later this month, and this trailer would be my project.
Anyways, here's a couple pics of the bow roller holder brackets. they were bent and are straighter now. Also one of the i.d. tag. Frank

Took the fenders of tonight and started on the shocks. Only broke one bolt. I have a bit of repair work to do...

Finally got the entire trailer in pieces. Now the fun begins.
Found this label on the tongue. I doubt the trailer weighs more than 500#s, so this means it could haul a good sized boat again someday. Frank

Have you tried finding any shocks yet Frank? I'm trying to get my Holsclaw roadworthy to make the road trip to pick up a project. The shocks are completely shot, started looking today. Looks like 1/2" mounting bolt eyelets on both ends, 9" compressed and 12" extended, center to center. The only thing I can find that is even close is a set of "coil-overs" thru Northern Tool, and they have to be ordered from their warehouse;

If it's like my D1475 they are 5/8 bolts Mark. These are the NAPA part #s I have come up with: shocks are 555002 (compressed 8.625, extended 12.75), and the bolt kits are 650-1100 (5/8 bolt). I haven't actually bought and checked these out yet, but I think they're the right part #s.

My mistake Mark, the oem ones are 1/2" and so are those #s I gave you. NOT 5/8.

Would a set of VW bug shocks fit? they sound about the same size just a thaught... I dont have anything to go by at work but sound similar.

Maybe they would, but that web link didn't give compression and extension #s. That's how I came up with that NAPA #, plus the eyelets are correct configuration and size. I would worry about VW stuff maybe being metric for bolt sizes?

when I get home I will look and see if I still have one thats not on the bus I installed 4 new ones I may have an old one around. good chance they are metric. You could give the #'s to Bap Geon on fuller Rd see if they come up with a KYB #.

I had thought about the VW Bug shocks too Jessie, but they're too long (12" compressed, center to center). NAPA wants almost $30 each for the shocks, so I guess I'll give the Northern ones (29.95 a pair) a try. I'll let y'all know if/how they work out........Thanks

I ordered them online this morning, having them sent to my closest store to avoid ALL shipping charges. They're # 13840, the link I posted above will take you right to them. They don't come with the bolts, but I can get those locally, 1/2" x 3" will do it I think. I'll let you know how they work out after the trip.

You're correct, but I measured and the 2" travel should be sufficient. The springs on the trailer only compress 2", the old shocks have more travel than the suspension actually does. I'll know more when I get a boat on the trailer. The trip will be without an outboard on the boat too, so that really won't give a true picture either. Fully outfitted and equipped boat and motor will be different (more weight), but we'll find out later. Right now I'm just trying to get my new project home on a short budget.

Replicating old trailer decals 14 years 6 months ago #30028

Trust me Mark, I know about tight budgets.
I am going to make my own trailer decals at home, as I don't really have the cash to have a pro shop do them. Any easy ways to "fix" an image like this (you can see the tear down through the "a"), and then fill in background color? Any suggestions for adhesive paper to print on from an ink-jet printer? This is exact size, about 6.25" long. Thanks for any help. Frank

I almost hate to post in on the Main Forum Mark, but I did. Hopefully whoever moves these posts around to the different forums will understand it's a general decal question, not just relevant to trailers. I don't figure Andrew (or a lot of others) looks at the trailer forum much.

Almond parts in primer 14 years 6 months ago #30548

Had to fix a badly damaged lip on one of the fenders, but it came out okay in part because the metal is heavy gauge. A skim coat of filler and you couldn't tell under the primer that it's been damaged and fixed.
The only other almond stuff to get done is the roller/bunks. I still need to remove the rollers before I get to the metal stuff. Maybe play with that today. There is very little pitting on this trailer, but a lot of surface rust. As a result, after sanding with 80 grit, and careful cleaning, I coat it with Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer. I'll let it sit at least 2 days before final paint. I got rebuild kits for the hubs, and will eventually get new wheels, tires, and shocks for it. This is going to make some vintage boat owner a real nice trailer someday! These babies are heavy duty. Frank

Wow Frank, you're really going to town on the Holsclaw! It took me a while to straighten one of my fenders yesterday, those babies are built tough - thick steel. Had to grind out the bolts holding the fender to the bracket, they were rusted so bad they wouldn't budge even after multiple soakings in PB Blaster! My trailer is rusted a good bit more than yours, but what are you using for sanding/rust removal there?

I'm using 3M Sandblaster 80 grit Mark. While it's predominantly surface rust, there's a lot of it. I have very little pitting. In disassembly only a couple bolts broke. I'll have to cut out one of the shock bolts, but it would take a picture to explain, and I have to finish up getting hubs on the Power Cat trailer before we head off to the outlaws, er, in-laws for Easter. That gives me two hours and I'll need to get cleaned up too, darn. Want to get a coat of finish paint on my new tongue this a.m. if I can. Too many things to do!

wow frank,your doing a fantastic job,especially on that fender,it was bad,but looks great now,i cant wait to see the whole thing done.

Thanks John, we're doing okay. I wish I could work on the boat today, first decent day we've had in a while, but we're off to visit in-laws downstate, so I feel your pain. Keep up the great work!

 If you want to replace the sticker with the specs/VIN on it, that would be easy, too... I wish I'd have seen this post earlier, it probably would have fit alongside the fender sticker. -Andrew |

What size is the sticker??
I'm working on a way to replace the aluminum plates, too, in small quantities, using waterslide decals... We'll see how it turns out. It might be a while, though- I have plenty of time to do graphics work now since I'm on the ship, but once I'm back home I've got a TON of projects to tackle -Andrew |

The trapezoid is about 3 1/4" top to bottom and 3 1/2" on a side.

It's no big secret- I'm in South Chicago!
I've been here all winter- We're laid up at the moment. A new company is taking over at the end of the week, and sending me packing. After 9 years What are the dimensions of the capacity/VIN sticker? That will be an easy one. I'll have to work on the other one a bit |

The Northern shocks came in, mounting holes too small (NOT 1/2" as advertised!) and cheaply made. (I know, duh, what did I expect, right?) 555002's it is! U Get what ya pay for.
