TOPIC: New Project - 71 Glastron GT-150

Re:New Project - 71 Glastron GT-150 13 years 2 months ago #44708

Totally understand, just thought I'd throw a shot out. ;) I'm still trying to get the Fat Fifty hot rodded, witha thread, paint its cover and get to the trailer before I start on the Century. The wife keeps throwing honey do's with priorities in front of it!

The bilge pump is a good idea, especially if you can't put the drain at the bottom of the V. The foam is a good idea also. I would have done that too. The big thing will be what's the lifespan of the foam you used. Some have a short lifespan depending on heat and moisture, like the stuff you can get for around your doors. I've seen some of that stuff break down after a couple of years, but that was in florida. I'm sure that's not as dense as the stuff you used but just an example.

I've been trying to decide how to tackle the bottom of the hull, whether to just slide it off the trailer, tip it up on her side and do one side at a time. Since I really wanted to be able to work through any weather, and do the entire bottom at once, I got brave and decided to flip her over! First attempt didn't go well, not enough room in the garage. Using a 1/2" drive 4" extension thru the motor well drain hole: So I pulled her outside, swapped ends, and gave it another go. Kinda nerve wracking doing it by yourself, but I got it done. :P Time to have a "sanding party".

Looking great.....can't believe you drove that far to get...you must have really wanted this project.

wondering where you had the come along hooked to and how much effort it took to flip?

Thanks guys, and yes Matt I wanted it a lot! Still do, now I want to go for a ride though. All in due time, I guess.

I ran a 3/8" x 4" long lag bolt with a hook on the end into the header across the garage door opening (inside) to hook the come-a-long into. I highly recommend having a friend or helper handy when you do it, it's a little tricky doing it by yourself. I ended up pushing down on the gunnel closest to me, reaching up and pulling the oposite side over the top toward me. The tricky part is holding it in position (level horizontally) while lowering the hoist(s)! (She wanted to flip back over, so I used some 2x2's to prop it in place. Let her down a little, re-position the props, etc..)

Didn't get anything done on the project today, it was 83* and I took the Starflite to the lake for some "R&R" time. All work and no play makes Mark a crazy boy! :woohoo:

Just finished up the final sanding on the hull yesterday, Ken. (Looking at the previous posts here, it only took 5 months!?) Getting kinda lazy these days I guess, but I'm no paint and body man. It's been gorgeous here too, so the "fire of desire" to get her done is renewed. The E'rude is ready for installation, I think I have most of the parts gathered I need, hope to post some new progress soon. ;)

Thanks Mike, Don. Words of encouragement like yours really help keep the attitude positive here. I guess it's going fairly well, considering it's my first renovation. We'll see how it turns out in the end.

One thing is for sure, it won't hold a candle to some of the fine "professional quality" work a lot of you guys are cranking out! But it's mine, my work, and hopefully something I can be proud of.

Finished painting the hull last night, it didn't turn out too bad. It's got a few bugs, (low to mid 80's here for the last couple weeks!) a few "oh shiz's" (I hope to touch up later), and the quality is no where near what most of you are turning out, but it's done! Gonna let it set this week, hope to flip her over back onto the trailer next weekend. Woo hoo! :P

Thanks guys. I decided to go with the Valspar paint and hardener, and used the "roll and tip" method to apply. The process went fairly well until the temp in the garage got up over 80 degrees, then the paint was setting up pretty quick and the "tip" part got a little tedious! (Doing it by myself, as is normally the case.)

We'll see how it holds up, I plan on getting plenty of seat time in when she's finished! Hope to flip her back onto the trailer this weekend, that's always pretty nerve racking. :P

Nice job! I'm amazed at the results some people can get with roll and tip. Never able to pull off myself.

I didn't want you guys to think I had given up, so here's a meager progress report. The hand sanding is taking it's toll, but I'm determined to get her finished! I wanted to do a little body work on the rough spots of the deck, it may be a while before I'm able to swing the nice padded bolster boards that go into the interior. Almost ready for some primer and paint on the topside..........

With all the high quality renovations and restorations being completed lately, I feel a little hesitant to post my humble attempt. I may not tackle another one, but I'm going to give this my best shot and by golly I'll get her done eventually! :)

Looking good, mark... This HAS to be the most frustrating part of the restoration process- you sand over and over, think you have it all, only to find more sanding that needs to be done. I feel your pain, I just went through it! But, it WILL get done, just keep focusing on the end result and you'll be fine!

How do you plan to paint the boat? Roll and tip like the hull? You may have mentioned it before but I don't recall, and I'm on my iPhone right now and can't easily scroll through the old posts...

Thanks for the encouragement gang, it definitely helps keep me going! I just keep telling myself the hard work now (prepping) will pay off in the long run. :S
Andgott wrote:

Yup, gotta do the best I can with what I have to work with! :)

I think a little "cut and buff" work after she has a chance to cure fully will bring it around to an acceptable level, for me anyway.

Yeah, your roll and tip looks great- at least from here! The whole cut and buff Process yields some amazing results with the right paint, too. Just make sure you get it nice and thick ( ask me how I know this ), so you've go a little material to go through. I sprayed mine, but after I still did the whole sand and polish thing, so I really didn't save all that much time in the long run. If I was better at spraying, I'd probably avoid a lot of extra work down the line.

Relax, take your time. No-body is rushing you. Try to enjoy the work as much as you can. If the top turns out as nice as the bottom did you are going to have one sharp looking Glassic there.

Isn't it a good feeling when you have the boat back on the trailer, and facing the right side up? I'm almost there my self. Its like a major turning point. Even though you still have a lot of work to do, you feel a sense of satisfaction.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks Don, I've got the basic technique down, it's the execution that still needs work!

Thanks for the tip Andrew. (Paint thickness) I'm not sure how "aggressive" I'll get with it once it's done, I too have had the ugly feeling when you've "buffed" right through a paint job.

Good to hear from you again Mike, welcome back! Gonna have to fill us in on what you've been up to lately.

So true Littlefin, so true. I truly enjoy working on the project, almost as much as boating itself. It just gets frustrating when the "old bones" protest, but I shouldn't complain - sorry. You're right about the "milestones", in my mind this is the third. Getting the sole (floor) back in was one, painting the hull was two, and getting her right side up and one the trailer was a biggie!

Well the painting is finally done, not perfect or show quality but not bad for my first attempt - by my standards anyway?...... Fabbed up a stainless steel plate so the motor doesn't "eat" my new paint job, and started mounting the "goodies" on her, hope to get some more done tomorrow. I'm pooped!

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. My work was minimal compared to what Don had to do to it when he first got it! (He did all the hard work, IMO.) I just wanted the paint to match on both halves of the boat. ;)

Two steps forward and one step back! I've had jack stands under the trailer while working on the boat, mounting the motor, etc.. (Keeps everything stable while you're crawling in and out, hanging motors, gotta be safe ya know.) When I went to push her out into the driveway yesterday to test run the motor, I moved the jack stands under the stern and the tongue of the trailer went straight up - the skeg hit the carpet (luckily) on the floor! Seems the weight distribution is a little (!?!?) off with the big V4, battery, etc. in the boat.

The Holsclaw trailer has bolt holes to move the axle back 4 1/4", so guess what's on the agenda for Saturday. :S
