I only have one comment. After you take all those digital pictures and store them in your boat folder on your hard drive, make a back up. I didn't, my hard drive toasted, and I lost all my pictures. Just friendly advice!

Well written post by the way. Where were you when I was working on my boat? :)

This is a great project that all FG members will benefit from.

I have just had my first conversation with Jamil regarding underwriting this Skagit restoration project.
I'll be going to his shop tomorrow morning to see the boat package, and discuss the project.
The plan is to discuss Jamil's desire to use the boat as a demonstration model, and likely add some other projects I'll want done like a new deck (cockpit sole).
He even has the colors I like in mind already.
So if the boat bottom is flat n true etc. I plan to hand Jamil the materials monies tomorrow so he can proceed with confidence and no delay. He will retain the rights to use all the pictures for the project here on FG for the benefit of all, or his book.

So, this FG member project should proceed nicely.

I'll report back here tomorrow guys n girls. See Heather I included girls, and not just because I know about your Thompson, that was a funny thread.

Bill - Thank you for contributing to the project, I have a hunch you're going to have one beautiful Skagit when this is done.

Jamil - I don't know that I will ever try doing this on my own, but I find your tutorial "riveting". You'll never know how much many of us appreciate your efforts here, taking the time to explain this process in such detail is beyond commendable. Even if many of us never attempt the process, we'll at least have the knowledge to know how it should be done properly. If nothing else, it could come in very handy to gauge the work of someone else enlisted to complete the task on your behalf! To many, it will instill the confidence needed to tackle the endeavor ourselves.

Hi Mark,
Went over to see Jamil today and bought the boat.
She's in better shape than I expected.
He's already started on her new transom, a curved transom at that.
The boat has the proverbial Skagit fiberglass stringers.
Serial number ID plate was present, 97U8025.
Decoding we find she's a 1959 model year, 17', Utility model with hardtop, 25th boat in the 8000 Utility series.

He'll be documenting various projects as he goes, so check back daily for his pics/commentary.

This boat and Jamil's expertise will be on display at the La Conner Classic Car and Boat Show this August 14th.
La Conner, Washington is the town where Skagit Plastics built Skagit boats.
A bunch of us FG members and Classic Skagit Boat Club members will have quite a lineup of glassics on display, including Skagit, Dorsett, Bell Boy, Glasspar, Dolphin, Power Cat and more.

We'll have a Fiberglassics banner displayed at the show, of course!
So if you'd like to meet Jamil and see his work, the website for the show is here:
www.laconnerchamber.com/classics.cfm

All FG members welcome and encouraged to attend.
FG member Clint "Strobee" is the trailer boat coordinator for the show. Maybe he'll post in a new separate thread so we don't clutter up Jamil's How To article here.

OK, looking forward to all the banter as this project proceeds with Jamil sharing knowledge, products and techniques here on FG.

It's so good to have a simple step by step to follow!

Question:
What special concerns are there for spraying primer?
Would I be risking my finish coat by spraying rather than rolling as practice for the finish coat?

I have a fresh air respirator. Based on what you've said about primer not really flowing out - perhaps I can spray that coat?
I say perhaps because I don't see myself spraying the finish. I don't have a booth. But for primer I should be ok - I'd then T/R the finish.

But...you've pointed out that the primer step is also a practice step for laying down the finish. But...you've said that you can't really do a T/R on the primer - it ends up being a roll only.

I recently aquired a 1963 elgin 15 and am currently disassembling the boat to paint. This is the most detailed oriented procedure I have ever read. Thankyou for all of it. Most helpful and needed, although I had to buy reading glasses for the first time in my life...jk :cheer:

Cool Jamil!
She's coming right along.
I like the new solid transom!
Will support a Bearcat 55 4 stroke just fine, which is moderate power for this hull.

Back out to my Skaj 20 today, removing all the cockpit seat bases etc for deck replacement. I should just run her over to you!

No Bill...you need to keep working on the Skag yourself so it's a working/running/beachcruising boat and you actually get one wet this year....

looks like Jamill is producing a show boat for you and you do NOT need 2 trailer queens...we'd heckle the hell out of you...(again ;-)

Hi Jamil,
The series is even more brilliant with the photos and specific project notes!

I have yet another question - do you see a way to repair cracks in a textured surface? These are on the deck of an OMC Dual Deluxe. All OMC boats have a textured surface that looks like the skin of a basketball. It's on the top deck and was imprinted from the original mold. I've seen this on other 60's boats as well so any help will probably benefit others.
I'm stumped - but you actually know what you're doing :~)

Re:Boat Painting pt. 1 and NOW ALL of pt.2 14 years 5 months ago #10883

Bill! That's it!
Amazing. I have to study the material to see how it works but they definitely have a good texture. Since I'll be doing the whole deck it's not a match problem.

Jamil - your procedure - minus the pigskin - is what OMC recommended. Make a mold of a good area. I can see that working on a small patch but not on a restoration. I think Bill has it!!

Addendum: It's a flexible material that has a female image of the texture you wish to repair/apply/replicate. It's sold in various sizes up to 4 x 8 feet. You cut it to the shape you desire, tape off the area or in the case of small repairs use release wax around the repair. You roll it down onto the surface pushing a layer of gelcoat ahead of it using a squeege to get it down smoothly. Once the gelcoat sets you remove the flexmold and you have the textured surface.

Thanks guys!

Peter

Jamil,

We all owe you huge thanks for this outstanding article! To get this degree of detail on the prep and paint process is amazing. I don't know how the karma tabs work on the site, but you earned some major karma points by sharing your knowledge so freely. Absolutely gorgeous work!

Re:Boat Painting pt. 1 and NOW ALL of pt.2 14 years 5 months ago #11563

Jamil,
I must say when you picked the boat up from me I was hopeful that you would do a good job and follow through on the promised reclamation. I had no idea that it would turn out to be the beauty that it did.
I owned that boat for a number of years, always with the desire to see her restored. Unfortunately time and lack of expertise kept me from even starting the project. You have done a remarkable job.
As I said when you picked her up, I have a fond spot in my heart for the old gal and I am warmed to the core that you have taken the time, were able to spend the money, and done such a professional job on this project.
Like many here had said, this is a great tutorial. If I had had this before, maybe I would have tackled the project (probably with a much inferior result). You have done "Johnny 17" proud. Congratulations. I hope to see her in the final condition.
Unfortunately I will be north on a sailing excursion the week of the LaConner show. If there is a way to get an address or contact of the new owner I would be very appreciative.
Again thank you for bringing her back to better than original.
