TOPIC: Howard Winch?

Howard Winch? 11 years 1 month ago #84666

Bought a boat / trailer rig a few weeks ago and the trailer (70s EZ Loader) has a Howard Engineering winch - has a stamp for model number but no model number was stamped). I searched everywhere and cannot find out anything about it. Winch has what appears to be a safety belt brake and crank fittings are 1" squares. I don't have and can't seem to find a crank handle.

Lack of info on the web about this winch suggests perhaps it's original application was other than for trailers? Although, I can't think of another use based on its design and fit.

Would really like to keep this - appears to be heavy duty but want more info and perhaps a source for parts.

Welcome aboard KC, glad to have you join us! Have you tried contacting EZ Loader, they may have some help to offer?

I definitely agree with keeping the setup, looks like maybe it is one of those you could move the handle between the two shafts for low/high gear ratio's? (Removable handle)

I have seen one of these somewhere but can't remember where. But I do not think it was boat related.

Cleaned up the side to reveal the company logo and model number 416. Can assume this one is boat related given the anchor :)

I'll figure it out, but does anyone know another manufacturer that used the square nut drive (male fitting)? I'd like to find a handle somewhere, else I'll need to make one.

A lot of sail boat winches use square drive handles. Howard did make winches for sail boats. Skip.
