TOPIC: cool old homemade trailer

cool old homemade trailer 14 years 1 week ago #19730

This came with the boat. Made in Benton Il. I put the new wheels and tires on it to transport it to Arkansas. The original wheels have the baby moons like the spare in the picture.

What size are your new tires for your trailer and what is the load capacity?

Pretty cool old trailer, AO. The E.W. stands for Empty Weight. Illinois used to (may still) have a law that all trucks (including private pickups) bear the name of the owner and his/her home town, don't remember if the E.W. was required as well. Evidently, this also carried over to trailers.

The "baby moon" style rims are highly collectible, if they're not rusted past restorable condition.

The load range on most of today's trailer tires are about:
785lbs each on 4.80 x 12
855lbs each on 5.30 x 12

Be sure to check inside the tubing/frame work for rust! We've seen some here that looked pretty decent from the outside, but suffered catastrophic structural failure due to hidden deterioration. (Translation = trailer tounge broke in half!)

If it actually was home made - it was, without any doubt, copied from a Gator from around 1957 or '58. They were made from tube, and had the lever activited tilt feature.
