TOPIC: Spammers on the attack

Lately we have received a much larger amount of spammers posting in the forums.

When you report them to the moderators, they are actively deleting them and reporting the spammers to admin with other information that allows us to block them.

They are very persistent and look for any opportunity to post their spam so we have to be persistent as well.

So, if you see spam, click on the "Report to Moderator" button please and we will deal with them.

By the way, the majority are coming from China and when I report the abuse to their ISP, they don't respond.

The few in the US we get, the companies respond.

We also have a big problem with these "spammers" from China and all over S.E. Asia. What we do is check all persons applying to be new members by their I.P. ADDRESS through this website:

www.ip2location.com/demo

This helps us immensly in keeping these spammers out and the wesbite is free to use Sir.

That is a good resource and we are using similar ip blocking techniques.

I have blacklisted ips from CHINANET-FJ based on a lookup of that company. Hopefully, we got them all.

I think twice before buying foreign products in general and this adds fuel to my fire.

AND a Special Thank You to all the members helping the moderators by hitting the "Report to Mod." button when you find the spam. Even though the board is patrolled regularly, it helps a lot to have all the extra eyes keeping a lookout!

On Tuesday night while on a ferry boat I logged in on iphone, must have deleted 15 or so fresh spam gifts.
Good thing we have mods from west to east coasts, I'm on second shift!

I think some of the measures taken have mitigated the attacks. Blocking entire chinese ip addresses.

And you wonder about why it comes from there and what they think they'll gain.

Looks like your efforts have paid off Ken, nice work! (Early shift reporting in with an "all clear").

I learned the hard way long ago to NEVER click on one of their links, or open an email if you don't know who it's from. Even if it's from someone you do recognize, if the subject looks hookey - it probably IS. I guess it's possible some are trying to sell their rip-off products, but I believe most are just trying to spread a virus or cause some sort of havoc in the (your) computer world.

My E-mail got hacked last Friday. From somewhere from South Africa. Probably from that Nigerian prince. Anyway, Yahoo mail intercepted it and I went thru a series of questions to re-activate my account. I appreciate the work FiberGlassics does to protect our accounts. There's another one floating around about grants. They'll ask for your bank account to deposit the money. This one's obvious.

spam has become epidemic in the last few months. I can't post a Craigslist ad without getting fifty spam replies.

YEP. And posting anything on CL seems to be "an effective way" to get on EVERYBODY's "porn sales list".
(I posted a model boat for sale on the SA Craigslist & within a DAY I had gotten some really FILTHY stuff offered to me.)

The day before this thread started I watched this happen! Reported to moderator, then watched as they continued to sign on as new member (1st time post) create their gobbledgooook I believe he or they where on there 4th thread when I not knowing any other way to stop them simply started a thred addressed to them saying "nothing better to do than to spread viruses??!!.....virtually halting for a moment the posting...I continued to report on every thread...real time as it was posted...then while watching who was sighning on noticed billr waspresent and the threads started vanishing. I emailed bill a few times that night during this experience...an hour and a half long...and never heard from anyone..at all.

Thank you for your help in reporting the spam to the moderators, Kurt. (Please see the post fourth down from the top above!) I'm sure Bill will tell you, when we're under "attack" from those spammers, the moderators have their hands full trying to delete the posts as soon as possible before anything bad happens. Sometimes we forget to take the time when it's all over to express our appreciation for those who lend a hand. Please be assured that your assistance IS appreciated.
