Yesterday for a few hours I was hearing tapping and hammering outside the house, not unusual since there is a new home being built nearby. Finally curiosity heightens so I went to investigate. This miserable SOB was hammering on the aluminum clad windows and glass panes. He went just about around the entire house testing out his new beak. Looks like a juvenile fresh from the nest. He destroyed one of the cedar window flower boxes. Finally caught him in my fish net and went for a walk in the back 40. He took off and never looked back.

This guy on the other hand is no bother, he and his cousin mallards and spouses are welcome guests.

I guess in boating terms he would be called a "woodie"

One day years ago my daughter called me while I was at work. She said the refrigerator was making a terrible noise.

I had her hold the phone up to it and after listening for a while, I realized it wasn't the refrigerator. I told her to go outside and take a look at the house.

Sure enough, a %&#^#^*$%$#^% Woody Woodpecker was hammering away on the gutter, right outside the kitchen! Made a terrible clatter. The refrigerator remains silent to this day.

Another time, we're out at the lake visiting some friends and I hear this woodpecker hammering away on an antenna they'd put up a tall tree. Made a heck of a noise you could hear all the way across the lake. Guess pore ol' lovelorn Woody wasn't doing so well in attracting a mate, he needed more amplification!

Dang things have pecked large divots out of the siding on my garage, too. Wish they would leave my stuff alone and keep to the rotten trees. No shortage of them, that's for sure!!

Cheers........ed

Ed. I sure can believe that. The hammering gets really loud. My neighbor has cedar siding and when those monsters go at it the whole area knows it.
