Been watching news on TV this morning (1-22-16) and can't help but laugh at the "big blizzard" going to submerge the northeast. 1" of snow shut down the nations capitol a few days ago  Best thing that could happen.
They should take a few lessons from folks in the upper Midwest, Dakootahs, Minneeesooootah, Wisscauhnson, Buffaloh. Geeeze guys, get a grip

Have you seen the projected wind speeds?

People are going to lose their lives in this storm so it's really not a laughing matter.

In the Mid-Atlantic, we aren't adequately prepared to deal with anything over 6" of snow. At least not like they are in New England or the North-Central US. The winters are so hit or miss here that its hard to be prepared for every storm that may come our way, indfrastucturally speaking of course.

Stay home or indoors, don't do stupid things like some weather channel reporter. Buy a shovel to dig out of your front door.
You'll live.

Some history. When I was stationed in Norfolk, VA back in the mid '60s there was about 1/2" of snow that had fallen. More car accidents and fender benders than I had ever seen. I went to a hardware store, bought a shovel just to help
people get back on the road. Lived right across the road from Ocean Park. I should of just got a bucket of sand to throw under their tires. Unaccustomed to conditions is no excuse where plain old horse sense is needed. If it's raining, put on a raincoat. If it's snowing, go out and play or stay inside.

That's what good neighbors do Ron. Glad you are a survivor. All the info I get is weather channel and news reports. Sounds like New Jersey got slammed not only with snow but a NorEaster @ high tide. Keep safe and warm.

We got 1" of snow...and THAT'S why I moved to South Carolina from Philadelphia which now has 30" on the ground and it's still snowing there.

Think of it as replenishing the fresh water supply in local lakes.

Re:Pardon me for laughing 8 years 11 months ago #119137

While I agree that people can be stupid, it is hardly a fair comparison. The states and city mentioned have a total population of around 13 million from what I just looked up. NJ, NYC and Long Island alone have a population of about 25 million in a geographical area a fraction of WI, MN, NnS Dk and Buff. The simple fact is that some folks have to go out fire, ems, etc, others make a living on the snow, and a LOT of folks don't get paid if they don't work. We also have far fewer areas to pile or dump the snow, and as mentioned we can't be prepared for every storm. Yea, high pop means higher concentration of stupid, but most is a result of ppl being ppl.

That said, hope everyone affected stayed safe and is dug out!

Hi Al,
I hope and pray for safety to all who can be affected by these winter storms. Even though we here in the Wisconsin north woods are well prepared, we still can have power outages that can last for some time. It is during these times that I am thankful for all the good neighbors in these rural areas that run to check on friends and especially the elderly.

Regards,Gene

Our son is going through his A.I.T. training at Fort Lee, Virginia. He said they got about 8" and all classes were canceled for 4 days. He said he watched 2 maintenance guys trying to use a snowblower and he was just about rolling on the floor laughing. He said after about a half hour they hit something with it and it quit working. Around here traffic hardly slows down for 8" of snow.
Even after growing up here in the "Great White North" in Wisconsin, I don't know how they can clear 3 feet of snow off the streets in places like Washington or New York.

I love it Cal!! The reason it is so funny is that it is pretty true. That reminds me, I need to go get more beer tomorrow because they are talking heavy snow on Tuesday.

Right, storm is supposed to come right across the state, west to east. Here's the deal...you take the brunt after it goes through the cities and I'll pick up the leftovers, I just have a 24" Ariens. I'm down to a pittance of juice also. Just don't put the delivery truck in a ditch.

That is one advantage to my job. Everyone is willing to help if I have problems. It is surprising how much attention a purple Crown Royal truck attracts.
