TOPIC: Gel coat scheme (interior)

Gel coat scheme (interior) 7 years 9 months ago #130096

Can anyone tell me how to reproduce this gel coat scheme. I believe if I fling a paint brush around with the various colors It might look similar?

Thank you for reading

You will have a very hard time to reproduce that pattern with a brush.
The way I get that pattern is to first spray or roll your base on then you need a spray gun. Turn the pressure way way down to around five pounds this will make the gun shoot drops because there is not enough pressure to atomize your paint - gell kote. Note make sure you practice on some card board. If going for a tri color then clean your gun and change colors.
Back to the brush. If you use a brush one thing I learned is to drill a hole in the handle of the brush and add a loop that will go around your wrist. That way the brush can not get away. Cause if it does it makes a big ole mess.

Someone wrote once to dip an old toothbrush in paint and flick the bristles with your finger to get the speckled affect, in a rubber glove of course.

Maybe a bigger scrub brush for the bigger speckles.
I have not tried it yet ? but that is my plan, by experimenting first ?

Yes, I am definitely going to experiment a few different ways.

I had read while using a spray gun to hold a pencil tip in front of the nosel starting with the tip for smaller spatters/splatters & then using the wider part for bigger spatter/splatters I have seen it written both ways!

It will be FUN!!!!

Chuck, when you said you are going to experiment, what boat are you experimenting on?

Herters59 what have you done this on?

I am restoring a 1957 MFG Chambridge. I have it dismantled., flipped over, damaged repaired & waiting impatiently for warmer weather.

In the meantime I have restored the steering wheel which if you look at the other posts I had asked a question about the center emblem. I am going to post before & after pics.soon

I am now onto the steering cables/controls. I just bought a new emblem off of ebay for $30.

Google Zolotone

It can be replicated by the methods posted above. Doing it wet on wet allows the drops to become part of the base coat instead of spots ON the base coat.

Experiment on something to get a handle on how to get the look you want.

Good idea, thanks.

I have looked at Zolotone but I do not remember finding anything to match
