TOPIC: 1973 MFG Gypsy

1973 MFG Gypsy 9 years 4 months ago #112861

New addition to the family. All original 73 Gypsy 16. Never been restored or repaired other than normal wear items. Has a few little nicks and dings but a coat of cleaner brought shine back with little rubbing and without any compound. Spent most of its life in a large storage building.

Re:1973 MFG Gypsy 9 years 3 months ago #113247

Getting ready to pull my hair out, both tanks shot from years of old fuel left in them. want to replace them with plastic or alu. Problem is the odd size. Where can I find replacements for a Tempo 252565???

Looks to be 7" high X 13" wide X 37" long. supposed to be 12 gal.

This thing has 2 of them and space is very tight.
They are under each seat. No where else to put a tank at.

Your boat is same as Crestliner Muskie 15 (MFG was in ownership of Crestliner for a period - lots of crossover / use of molds.

What motor - and where is crack?

3.0L 140 merc

Crack in manifold just below center 2 outlet, and crack above freeze plugs in block

wasn't outside, was inside under house garage. we had stuff freeze in this area that never froze before. last winter was bad. They said paid to have it winterized. wasn't done. got receipts from place bunch of work was done. What a bunch of idiots. everything is rigged together. They rebuilt carb but didn't replace cracked float. cleaned 1 tank (which now leaks) other side wasn't touched and has over an inch of sludge in the bottom. fuel lines rigged. Pretty on outside but nothing was fixed correctly for it being last inspected in '96 then brought out and "refreshed" in '14

Was no trace of leak till I started it.

Guy going to weld it on sat, got my fingers crossed. Guy does it for a full time job and says he gives it a 70% chance of it being a permanent repair with no future problems.

Its in great shape but I'm not interested in changing motors. Someone else can have a project, I've got enough. Only bought it to get on the lake sooner while I fix my larger boat.

Crack above freeze plugs. Common not properly winterized. Bought it because I didn't want another project. Was supposed to be ready for water. Crack was hidden.

After weld added thin coat of JB Weld, then a couple good coats of paint. Looking good.

Manifold is coming along well right behind it. will post pics of it when its finished.

On a side note, added a trolling motor. Guy had a plate made to mount a 2 stroke 3.9 merc that came with the boat on top of the out drive. I took an old bow mount Minn Kota and removed all the extra stuff. Mounted it to the back side of the home made plate. Now will build a plate for the speed control on the dash and I now have a trolling motor that is turned by the steering wheel.

Two new tanks ordered today. aluminum welded with baffles all connections and flanges for electric gauges. $470 for the pair shipped. Into this hole in the water for more than its worth now, so guess I'm going to have to keep it to get my moneys worth of use out of it.

Tanks came today. Nice. Ended up being $455 including shipping. Way cheaper than any other quotes. Size adjusted for better clearance to allow air to flow around them to keep it dry. Factory tanks spec at 12 gal. These came out at 11 1/2 gal. Works for me.

Nice to hear you have your boat running, I see the PA registration and thought I would let you know there is another MFG here in PA. Will not be posting pics at this time, it is a project also, how much I am not sure. It is a 73 15' Gypsy with a 75hp Johnson Stinger outboard on it, I parked it about 3 years ago when the grandkids brought it back with the engine not running, now it has collected everything that was in the back yard. Waiting for retirement project! Muncy, Pa.
