Hello all,

Tuning up my 61 Merc 800 after experiencing some hesitation coming out of the hole.

Had this problem before and determined one of the cylinder bleed check valves was leaking. Checked them again and sure enough #3-4 was leaking a bit. I had an extra new valve so went ahead and replaced it.

Decided to replace fuel pumps and also checked and cleaned carb filters and needle valves and bowls.

Have a breaker plate with refurbished points with new rotor ready to go. But looking at the distributor cap I question the condition of the poles and would be interested to hear others opinions. All 6 appear the same a 1 shown here and there are no cracks in the plastic. I seem to recall spending over a hundred bucks last time I replaced it.

Thanks,
Terry

Clean them and go, but where is the center carbon brush?

soap and hot water and a brush will do well a knife works on the metal. rinse with Hot water and blow dry. just a tad of grease on the side of the carbon.

Thanks Guys,

Removed the carbon buildup by scrapping gently with a knife blade and then polished up with a fine abrasive pad.Washed out with soap and water an finished by spraying with electrical contact cleaner.

And was sure to reinstall the brush before reassembling.
