TOPIC: 1982 Merc 115 Inline question

1982 Merc 115 Inline question 10 years 3 months ago #98836

Hello,
I am currently finishing up a freshing on an 82 Merc inline-6 and have a few questions.
1) Should I re-jet the carbs to larger jets for todays fuel?
2) Should I adjust WOT timing as well?
3) Do I need / should use 93 octane?

appreciate the help

I have a '77 115 and the only reason I use 93 octane is because the station I buy my gas at has no alcohol in the premium. The cost is 40 to 50 cents a gallon higher, but by the time you add Sta-Bil or any other additive to counter act the alcohol you probably have about that much more in it anyway. And even with the additives, regular gas still has the alcohol in it.

Unless you are at some unusual altitude the stock jets should be fine. Timing should be set to spec, but you can retard it a couple of degrees if it make you feel better, there should be none or little loss in performance. Secret to making the inlines healthy is to keep a fresh water pump impeller in it, run the best oil you can buy and keep the fuel fresh, nothing over six months old. Prop to the high end of the rpm range and that engine should outlast you, it is a fabulous engine.
