So I was restoring my 69 Merc 650 and realized the wires are exposed because the insulation has hardened and flaked away. Needless to say this is a huge safety hazard so it needs replacing. I have found the internal wiring harness on the internet without much difficulty. However, there is a little mercury switch (pt# 33385A5) that I need to replace and cant find it anywhere because its obsolete. Anyone run into this problem before either with the same part or another part? Do they replace it with something more modern? Its part 62 cdn.boats.net/diagram/Merc/MERMAR/48425/2.png

The function of the mercury switch isto cut out the ignition in the event of a massive impact that tips the prop clear out of the water. The switch would therefore prevent over revving and also lessen the impact once the motor starts to come down and prop suddenly grabs water again. Frankly I would not worry about this happening and would not hesitate to eliminate the switch. But that's just my humble opinion.

Hi,
If you should like to continue to have the safety feature, we have this one available which will likely have a shorter wire than yours, but a jumper wire can be added, or this can be extended.
