TOPIC: looking for prices on used lower unit

looking for prices on used lower unit 10 years 5 months ago #94167

So took a chance and dewinterized last month (early April )in Colorado. Took the boat out and after 5 minutes broke the steering !!! After much help from merc legend Joe poole, I replaced the cable and helm . Last week we got a couple of decent days so I took her out to test the steering , which despite me intentionally incorrectly installing the clevis part worked fine . However the winds where gusting 30 +mph ! And we got blown off our anchor into a muddy shore. after using a paddle and the trolling motor I got us back out. Not much later while trolling , we started getting pushed toward a rocky shore. I attempted to reverse but could not get it to engage. It made a clicking in the low reverse and in high it just reved up the engine , but no motion. At the dock tied up I retested with the same results . I contacted mr. Poole about it. He gave me some fantastic and in depth info that should get me pretty far. However IF my l/ u needs rebuilding I am considering what a used but functional one would sell for on here . I know many of you fellas have parts to sell . Just thought I'd ask . It's a 65 merc 1000. Its a long shaft l/u fitted on a short shaft powerhead . So I could use a short or long shaft lower . I would guess doc or Dave Bernard might have something .....

I'm not quite following you in respects to being able to use either a long or short driveshaft lower unit in the circumstances you describe??
But,...I have both long & short, and if needed, my email addy is in my profile & my phone number is in the '59 mark 55 AE' thread.

And,...You may not need another lower unit IF,...With the engine off, and a pal rotating the propeller while you shift into Reverse you find that there is more space in the slot's aft end of the sliding shift linkage at the aft end of the shift control cable.
NOTE:
Your assistant might tell you once you initially shift the controller into Reverse, that the prop is not slipping the dogs as you heard out on the water, but it is just because he is probably unable to apply enough torque to the prop to get the dogs to slip.

I assume Joe Poole Jr already explained this possibility and how to re-adjust the shift cable so it will go clear to the aft end of this slot, and consequently allow the shift dogs to engage Reverse gear deeper, but if not - just post and I'll walk you through the procedure.

Wow ! Thanks doc . Joe did fill me in on that possibility. I'm not entirely sure about the process , Joe told me to disconnect the shift cable and measure how far it travels in each direction when the control handle is moved. My motor has an extension kit , its set up with the long shaft l/u , instead of having a shaft extension , it has the extra spacer block between the main and lower units !! Took me awhile to figure out , after a phone call with lengthy description Joe was able to tell me what I have. I'm eager to try adjusting the cable , if you have a second to post your process , it would be very appreciated. Everything is covered in snow today , so I will have to wait til tomorrow or Wednesday to wrench again .
