TOPIC: favorite generation of merc

favorite generation of merc 10 years 6 months ago #93971

Was just wondering if any of the folks on here who have been working with mercury motors have a favorite generation ? is there a standout period of production ? I love my 65 1000 , but since its the only merc I have operated on I can't say much

I have a 68 and a 65 Merc 500. I love the look of the 65 Merc's. The all black with the chrome accents and gold embossed Mercury decal is pretty cool.

I personally like the 65-68 they all have different bandings around them from gold to silver to silver with a red pinstrip, and the chrome on the cowling just can't be bet IMHO.

1) Red-Stripe '71 1350, had one on a 16' Sidewinder SS and loved it!

2) Any of the '50's racing "H" motors; the Holy Grail being the Mark 75H!

3) Any vintage Twister!

My favorite would have to be my first "tower", a 1962 Merc 700 FGS. She was original (dealer installed) to the one owner Cutter Tornado that was my first Glassic. Worst case of seller's remorse ever !!

Cloud white's with black bands. My Uncle had one on plywood kit boat. That's the motor that put me on to Merc's.

I love the inline-6 Mercs to be sure, but I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the Hurricanes.
My favorite Hurricane powered Merc would be the Mark 25.
Sweet running with beautiful cowlings.
The one in the pictures is a rather rare Mark 25E electric start.
One picture is before and the other is after I rebuilt & restored one a few years ago.

I've had an '84 75hp 4-cyl and '87 85 hp 3-cyl, but my favorite is the little '63 35hp twin I have now. Fired right up today on the muffs from winter storage and was running smoothly after a couple of minutes of burning off the fogging oil.

Never restored - just maintained.

The old mark 55's are my favorite for looks the rounded top had and polished aluminum reminds me of the classic cars you see at shows.
