I have 2 motors, (one standard shaft and one shortshaft) same exact powerheads 1961 Merc 500's and was wanting to know if I can switch powerheads with the shortshaft lowerend ?

So they will swap out. I would more than likely need a new set of seals.
The drive shaft is seperate from the crank shaft ? . Any advice regarding skillset to perform this swap. Need any special tools ? |

Order a water pump and replace it while you have it apart. You are just taking one step more than you would do if you were changing the water pump on the tear down....talking 2 motors apart

Agreed on the effort - no problem and no special tools. Definitely replace all the seals and gaskets.

And buy a Merc repair manual before you even pick up a wrench.
