Ok guys, I'm new here and I've been reading through some of the information on other Merc 1000 posts. I'm impressed with all the knowledge available here. So I'm hoping to get educated. I'm not a mechanic but unfortunately I saw a boat and had to have it. She is a 1960 Alumacraft 18' Queen Merrie with a 62-64 (guessing) Merc 1000. The seller pulled her out of the garage and filled up a barrel with water to test her and she fired up nicely and ran well for the test. That was enough for me. She is mine now. So here are my questions;

1. Can someone look at the motor and tell me what year it is? The seller said the boat and motor are 1960, the boat checks out but a little research suggests to me that the Merc 1000 is 62 and later.

2. When I need parts what will that be like? Where do I look etc.

3. Any chance someone still works on these? (the boat is in NW Montana near the Idaho border)

I would say 1965 by the decals definitely not 64 or prior.

Cool, thanks. I'll check the serial number against the links.

The first sign that she isn't running well I'll just consider the motor trash and ship it off to frog ;)

Any recommendations on additives to deal with the ethanol/water issues?

I agree that the faceplate decals definitely indicate the engine to be a 1965.

This excellent decal site can also be used to determine engine years.

www.nymarine.ca/index.html

For restoration/remanufacturing work on these engines, contact Darrell at this site.
If you look in the completed engine pic section, you will see some 1965 1000's. Since he is also a Mercury Dealer he may be able to sell you hard to find parts. He is located in NW Wisconsin, about an hour east of Minneapolis. People ship engines to him for the work. Ebay is also a good source.

He did a Merc 115 for me, and the work is first class:

He also did classic fuel tanks for me:

Be sure and install a new water pump impeller, unless the seller has documented that has been done within the last year - two max.
Do not run ethanol if possible as it WILL cause problems in the fuel delivery system.
Original Merc fuel hoses will break down inside, fuel pumps and float chambers will develop goo like deposits that will attack the aluminum and over time really ruin your day.
Use 91-100 octane gasoline, mix in at 50:1 either a full synthetic or premium oil specifically designed for 2 cycle outboard motors. The proper oil will have noted on the container that it contains the additive TC-W3.
I further encourage folks to add SeaFoam and Star-Tron (or Sta-Bil Marine) as per the container to every tank of fuel mix. These additives are not part of the 50:1 mix - these are additives in addition to the 50:1.
The SeaFoam helps soften existing carbon deposits, and aids in keeping new deposits from building up. Besides keeping a strong water pump working with a new impeller install every Spring or every other Spring MAX (on any inline-6 Merc) combating carbon build up in any 2 cycle outboard motor is very important.

Following is an aid I have created for first time classic Merc operators.
Hopefully you will find it helpful.
I encourage folks to plastic coat the (3) pages & keep them in the boat until they are fully acquainted with the procedures.
You will need to 'click' on the E-D-B-D pages to read them.

Thanks Dr FrankenMerc, this is the kind of information that a first time older Merc owner can only hope he gets his hands on. I'm very grateful.
