TOPIC: 70 hp Merc dies @4000rpm

Hello to all
I have a 1989 Mercury 70 hp 3 cylinder outboard that runs pretty
darn good until I try to go over 4000 rpm.It seems to just flat out loose all fire and comes back on as soon as I pull the trottle back
below the 4000 rpm range.I isolated the rectifier on my last trip to the lake but still dies out @ 4000rpm.I do not own a DVR meter,yet,but would like to know if I can check this problem out with what tools I now have.My motor has the gray painted flywheel and the black molded stator. No 3 cylinder expert but it sounds like a fuel issue more than electrical. Have you tried priming the fuel bulb while this happens ?

try it with the cover off.

If you find that it is not a fuel delivery issue (weak fuel pump diaphragm or valves, improperly set float, prime bulb valve, or fuel tank vent, ethanol goobers in the carburetors, etc) consider OHMs testing the 'high side' of the stator.
I don't think you would be able to get as high as 4000rpms with a faulty high side though. I think that failure shows up around 2500-3000rpms.

I replaced the stator and have solved the problem of not going over 4000 rpm's.A friend on another board mentioned that this
motor has a low speed loop and a high speed loop built into the stator.He also said the low speed winding usually goes bad first,but my trouble was at about 3000 to 4000.
