I,m looking at a 1961 or there abouts 850 merc 6 cyl. and I was wondering how much does it weigh? the boat had a 1962 75 hp Johnson on when I got the boat. are they comparable in the weight between the two? I have replaced the transom and can add some knees if I have too. the boat is a 1958 shellake rocket 16 ft long. thanks. frog

Around 230-240 lb if I recall. Not a lot of difference in weight between the old V4 and the Inline, but a world of difference in performance and fuel consumption! If you've run the boat at all you're aware of how much fuel an old V4 "swills".

The 850 will burn about 8.5 GPH at full throttle, but at least you'll be getting an excellent turn of speed out of it!

HTH........ed

p.s. It is remarkable on how much weight these Beasts have gained with age, isn't it!!!! Can't figure out how that happens! ;)

I agree with the fuel consumption. I have a '63 850 and that would be about what it uses. Pushing a '59 Thompson Sea Lancer I figure it gets about 3 M.P.G. using the mileage markers on the Mississippi. The boat has a "dry weight" of about 800 lbs.
Frog, do I know why you are asking??

P.S. These motors are like most of us, getting heavier after we turn 50 !!!!

I have came to the scientific conclusion that its not that things get heavier with age, its GRAVITY that increases! HA!
