TOPIC: Any 350 Merc (67-69) Fans?

Any 350 Merc (67-69) Fans? 11 years 2 weeks ago #85883

Hey all, my 1970 Shell Lake has a 1969 350 Mercury on it. As I've yet to put the boat in the water, just curious if there are any folks willing to offer up any comments, good or bad about this motor?

Thanks - Mike

Rodney Dangerfield of Mercs, don't get no respect. Great engine, very smooth for a big twin. Parts are a bit tougher to find than for a four cylinder of the same vintage but they are are out there. Excellent on gas, but they will not set any speed records, more of a lover not a fighter when it comes to top end speed. Very dependable engine with simple mechanicals, best suited to small light runabouts. Prop it so it turns to the high end of the range, use good oil top and bottom, change the impeller every few seasons and it will last a lifetime. I have three of them in my collection.

Wow! I couldn't be more happy with that review : ) My current short term project is a 1970 Shell Lake (I've already forgotten the model) that is intended to my sunset cruiser. Sorry about the orientation of the pic, I had to resize the picture and this always seems to happen when I do that.

Beautiful boat, should be an excellent match for that engine.

Thank You - I was blessed with this deal. Kinda of a depressed sale but the seller was glad it was going to good place. I've learned if I'm patient things come my way. Kinda like standing in the river versus swimming up stream all the time : )

Could not agree more... I looked for years to find a 1963 Merc 500 and could not find one. When I stopped looking I had one given to me right out of the blue!!! Same goes for my second marriage.

Have a '63 Merc 350 on my new (to me) '66 MFG Niagara - all unrestored. Looking forward to getting it on the water in the spring.

Those sure are good little motors,I spent alot of my youth behind one.My Dad bought one used in 69 for his Herter Yukon. Just a few years ago he took it to the Keys to use since as he was getting up there his regular boat was getting too hard for him to use. Even though he flushed it every time it finally started to give him some kind of problems. He took it in to have someone look at it and was told it was not worth repairing. It upset me at the time but being 1500 miles away there was little I could do.

They are indeed, hard to say anything bad about them.
