Can't pin point it but about 200lbs so don't worry your not a weakling :) Think it would be hard for two? I don't have a shop crane yet so use the beam over my driveway entrance hooking a come-a-long to it and that works to get motors off and on. Problem is finding something high enough. I removed the cowl and couldn't hook to power head to get high enough so coverd it with a moving blanket and strapped with cargo straps with the hooks, worked ok. Would be a good idea to have a friend help guide the motor...

I was thinking of changing out my 1964 50 HP with a larger motor. So I have been looking for a 65 hp. I see here that a 70 hp is just under 200 lbs. Is there a book to look up engine weight?

What does my 1964 50 hp weigh?
same era 65 hp?

I know there is more to consider on a small 14 foot boat, like shaft lenght. My 50 is a short shaft. Do i need a power trim on the 70 hp?

Think a mark58 (4 cyl.45hp) is around 130# and Mk75 around 180-190# which is like a 700. going from what i saw in service manual but when the Mk's ended they didn't list weight in that book? Tilt would be nice but no one really 'needs' tilt and trim imo, a luxury for us lazy guys in the 21st century ;), could be useful if you have a bad back. I Only need to tilt at the ramp and beaching sometimes. Kinda tricky tilting the 650 while in the boat, might be easier with a stack 6 i'm thinking with its extra height???

The 64 merc50hp should come in around 150ish. Around that time the weights got a little mixed up in a lot of different books. This is the weight that we got off of a hanging scale when we took a 65 merc 50hp off a boat a couple of months back. Hope it helps you. Skip.

To give you an upper limit, my '63 1000 long shaft weighs 295# in stock form.

In my garage I lift it with a come-along hooked to a chain, which is wrapped around a home made I-Beam that spans 6 or so ceiling joists to distribute the weight. The I beam is a simply two 2X6's nailed and glued and then fastened to the joists. In the basement with a low ceiling I use a come-along and some twisted steal cable (from any home store) routed through a heavy eye-bolt in an "L" configuration. More details on that if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the help everyone. From the posts here, it looks like a 70 hp is 50-60 lbs more than the 50 hp of the same era. While that is certainly additional weight on the back of a small boat, it is not a deal breaker. In my perticular boat set up, i always felt like I had too much weight forward anyway.

295# seems like alot for a '63/1000 ? thought they were closer to 220#

More like 240 lb.

A 99-cubic-inch 6-cylinder longshaft weighs-in at around 300 lb and an 85hp 4-cyl longshaft is 252 lb, just for reference purposes.

If not over 240# for early 60's 6 cyl short shafts without T&T sounds reasonable. I dragged my 700 off the truck and seemed quite heavy but didn't think it was near 300#? Maybe all the corrosion made it lighter ;)

If anyone knows of a chart with weights through the 70's, it would be a nice addition to the library or somewhere here as Merc motor weights come up now and then?
