TOPIC: desperate, depressed and defeated

desperate, depressed and defeated 11 years 3 months ago #80390

recently changing the impeller on my merc1000. It has a 5 inch extension. I struggled intensely with aligning the shift shaft, probably because of the extension and shift shaft extension. It looked lined up after wrestling with it for an hour. after bolting up and restarting (on hose) it starts in gear(pee hole functioning !) and also makes and clicking sound after shut down for a second or two. I installed with the l/u and control lever both in gear. Clicking sounds kind of like a wind up toy. Do I just need to drop it again and try in neutral ? Any input would be appreciated fellas. This has me feeling a bit broken. I live in the mountains and the nearest marine shop is 2 hours away over 2 difficult mountain passes. my vehicle cant endure that drive. i dont want to retire from boating after only 5 days out ! Im addicted ! I have even been considering calling the mercury classic hotline for 20 bucks. The mobile options all seem sketchy. if anyone can send me some advice i would be extremely grateful.
thanks

With the motor in forward gear you will hear clicking if you turn the prop clockwise and it locks solid going the other way.
Normal.

I'm not 1 / 100th as experienced as the others on this site. But in my recent battles with my LU i've learned that using a process of elimination can be helpfull in finding the problem.

Can you put the LU on without the extension? Get that aligned first and see how it goes, then add in the next variable.

Good luck.

breathe!! There were times when I had to simply set down the tools and walk away for a day or two.

I have a 63 1000 and a lot of pics of when I was working on it so drop a line if yours is of the same vintage and you have a question. By no means the expert on this site, but I've been down the road

I always install the LU with it and the shift shaft positioned in Neutral.

And if you ever want to part with that five inch extension, let me know!

thanks peter,
I managed to get er reinstalled today .. in neutral did the trick !cant wait to get out on the lake in the next couple of days. got a fuel leak to deal with first. the extension has me confused. seemed like the side with the fins should be the top, but the reverse lock cam wont fit in with it that direction. so i have it installed with the fin side facing the l/u and the solid side mates to the main unit. sound right to you ?
