TOPIC: Merc 850 prop shaft

Merc 850 prop shaft 11 years 5 months ago #78491

I have a bent prop shaft on my 1977 Merc 850. Don't believe any interchangeable shafts exist out there. Does anyone know if I can use a different h.p. prop shaft? Any one out there got an 850 prop shaft for sale?

Give ol' Doc Frankenmerc a holler, he can fix you up with a good used (unbent) propshaft.

His user name is Dr_Frankenmerc on this forum.

George,
Is there any difference between a 2:1 prop shaft and a 2.31:1 prop shaft, if they are both 12" or 13.25" bullet length gear-cases??
mhutine,...If George can't help you - I probably can, but I would like to hear from George before I offer help.
George is one of my Mercury Gurus. :-)

The '77 850 and 1150 both use the 52542 propshaft, and I went back to the 1970 models and the 650, 800, 1150, and 1350 all use the same shaft.

I'd say it's pretty safe to say that they'll interchange nicely.

The 52542 shaft was superseded by 93003 (OEM $541.00) but I don't know if there's anything about that shaft that would preclude it being used in an eariler model. A lot of the newer motors use the same 93003 shaft, as well.

Thanks for the info. I looked at the part #s also, and saw the different shaft #. Didn't think they would put a different part # with identical parts. I don't really want to spend 5 bills on a shaft if I can help it.
