TOPIC: Carb "grills"?

Carb "grills"? 11 years 10 months ago #71560

I noticed on later model mercs these black plastic 'grills' or maybe call the 'grates; over the carb throat. What were they for? I figured perhaps meant to create air turbulence to help mix up the air and gas? I've been banging around the idea of something such as that for my '63 1K.

Simply to stop stuff from finding its way into the engine. There is no technical benefit.

Dave is absolutley Correct. They.re just there to catch the bug chunks before they get into the motor.

Interesting ...... I figured as much but was hoping for more. big chunks of what? The openings are like a 1/4 inch.

maybe I'll waste some (more) time and money and see if I can retro fit one of those propeller shaped things that are meant to spin the air going into the carb for better atomization of the fuel.

Yeah. This winter. Right after I finish that Pertronix conversion...

Well, if the wrap is off in the yard running on a hose, and a stray leaf comes down and a carb sucks it in? Could cause havoc with the reeds. Plus deteriorating inside wrap insulation. Who knows?
