The two tilt assist cylinders on my 1964 65 hp seem to be doing no assisting at all. Sure makes it difficult to pull the motor up from inside the boat. Anyone here have any experience with rebuilding these units? Are they gas charged, oil filled, spring loaded? Mine work freely but no assist.

Norm, they are not for helping tilt up, they are to prevent drastic tilt up when you hit something under water. When moved quickly the shocks absorb the energy.

Thanks Dave, I didn't know that. Hopefully the motor will be a bit easier to tilt up when the boat is in the water.

I think I've seen them, maybe in Overton's. I may go for one once the boat is lakeworthy.

My OE manual says to grease the shock rubbers when you assemble them back onto the motor. My 650 4 pot l/s was very difficult to lift up, after removing the shocks & lightly greasing them inside & out it is much better.

Thanks to all for the tips. I was judging the difficulty of lifting the motor by lifting the skeg. Once I tried lifting it from inside the boat it seems a bit easier. Seems to be some shock absorber action at the top 50% of travel. Getting anxious for a test run at the lake. Maybe this weekend...
