That serial number isn't coming up on any of the engine parts search sites. The blue bands were from the early seventies I believe, but we've seen folks change them before to make 'em look period correct. Hopefully one of the "real" Merc gurus can help.....

GOOD looking Glastron BTW!

Are you sure the first digit is a seven? If it's actually a four, it would be a 1974 model.

the previous owner thought the motor to be around the same year, so looking over my glasses and squinting coulda made a 4 look like a 7.

Your decals are from 1973. The only year for that exact decal.

Your serial number is for something newer like Dave said.

For your serial number to match 1973 your digits would have to start with a 3.

I quick picture under the hood and I could tell you a lot more. Post a picture of each side of the motor with out the wrap off and Ill tell you more.

When you look under the hood and if it still has 2 fuel pumps on the side of the motor its probably a 1973 powerhead put onto an early 80's mid. If you look under there and it is FULL CDI igniton(no dist and many coil packs) then someone just put older decals and wrap on an early 80's motor.
Thanks

i will take some more pics...but i saw a dist and a coil...and i think only one fuel pump. right now i am just having fun with the new toy, but i am pretty sure it is not getting to full revs and have procrastinated doing all the little jobs i want to do on it. so no tach installed as of yet to know for sure, speedo is not working either yet. gonna be a big fishing derby and will be avoiding the cluster@#$%^ of boats for a week n work on her...thnx 4 the help thus far.

1973.

If you would please look for the serial number on the block. It should be just to the left of your fuel pump. Lots of times its on a small non painted part of the motor. Let me know what that number is.

Also please tell me if your transom clamps have thumb screws, bolt head thrumb screws or NO thumb screws(direct bolt on)

These answers will let me answer a few more questions for you.

Thanks

Well shoot. It looks like your block does not have the serial numbers stamped by the Ser No area.

Well Id say your motor is all from 1973. I dont know why your serial number starts with a 7? Possibly a Canada model?

If your mid was from the mid 80's it would not have thumb screws.

Your block does have a interesting stamp. That C. That C I thought was only on 1500's, but I guess I am wrong.

well both me n the boat are in canada eh ;) thnx conrad...it does run "top shelf" but i think the prop is wrong...unsure if its getting any where near is rev limit, and about 35mph...gets there quick....but i think a 115 on this boat should do 40mph+??

but i think a 115 on this boat should do 40mph+??

I'd say you're pretty darn close with that estimate, Delirius! (42 mph in my V-178 with 115 hp). Hooking up a tach is going to be essential in "dialing it in".

I wonder if a service dealer/shop replaced the block on the motor with a factory replacement somewhere along the line, hence the lack of serial number?

Hi Delerious, it is definitely a 1973 1150 made in Canada. It looks to be in very good shape. I am South of you on Lake erie. Your speed is going to depend a lot on your prop pitch and those engines do not like to be over propped. My guess for your boat it should be about a 17P. Your top end rpm will be around 5200 rpm. The 1150 is a non power ported motor, lots of grunt on the low end but it will run out of steam around 5000 to 5200 rpm. Great motor.
In 1973 Mercury rated their engines at the power head as most manufacturers did. By todays ratings (at the prop) it would be rated as a 90 Hp. In fact, the late 80's 90 hp inline 6 has the exact block but with ADI ignition instead of the distributor.

thank you gentlemen....droolin over my new tach as we speak...gonna attempt being on the boat all weekend (by attempt i mean you cant even get to the launch due to all the fishermen entering our derby) hoping a 30 min drive will find a "not so nutso" launch and uncluttered waters. i think my prop is a 21. after the weekend i`ll add the tach, new speedo, mount my gps better, 2 more speakers and a few other things as the nut cases will be angling here for another week...ugh.

well both me n the boat are in canada eh thnx conrad.

well that answers the question!

If you ever have time to pull an intake cover off the side of the motor, look and see if it has power port pistons.

I have a sneaky suspision that you have a 1500 powerhead replacement on your 1150.

That would explain the "C", and the 21P prop. (19P is as big as I can swing with 115HP). Might have to adjust your speed guestimate up a tad, Delirius!

Hey guys,

Bringing back an old thread here :)

I have what I believe is a 90HP tower of power on my 17' yarcraft.

I always knew this motor was special in that it's loud and powerful as all get out. It sucks gas too and is VERY hard to cold start. I usually use Gum-Out spray into 2 of the 3 carbs to get mine cold started although new plugs semi-help too.

I just got a bunch of pictures of it to sell it (below linked to my server) but I didn't get any in depth pics of the motor.

I'm trying to figure out what I can sell this beauty for but am not sure of the HP or year of the motor. I have it in documents that it's a 90HP and is a 1980 year but am not sure. The Yar-craft boat is a 1997 fiberglass and depp V-Hull. The fuel tank is massive too.... I wanna say it's about 25 - 30 gallons.

Can anyone tell me from these pics what year the motor is? I plan on getting back to my lakehouse soon to get pics of the inside of the engine.

Overall the motor is a 10/10. It starts, runs, runs WELL, is mega powerful (People can ski on it at HALF throttle). I just had it overhauled after I bottomed out on my old steel prop and bent the shaft. I had a new shaft put in it and just a tune up all around and it's just lovely.

Last question: I've been using 32:1 fuel mixture and it's RICH. Is that right or should it be even richer?

I can't tell from the pictures, but you can check your serial number against the list on this page:

store.oldmercs.com/category_s/2687.htm

And you should be able to pin down the year.

Re:new (to me) boat with a merc, what year??? 8 years 3 months ago #125198

32:1 is way too much oil, and you are not doing it any favors by doing that. Run the oil at 50:1, no more, and use a quality TC-W rated brand, no discount stuff. Heavy oil mix is used for racing and break in only, and can lead to carbon build up, ring sticking and other maladies.

Re:new (to me) boat with a merc, what year??? 8 years 3 months ago #125200

Thank you for the tip on that gfgarland!! I will use 50:1 and tell the next guy too.

I just double checked and I have actually be using 40:1, NOT 32:1.

Sorry for the mis-lead there. Still too much though so I'll cut it back a bit.

Re:new (to me) boat with a merc, what year??? 8 years 3 months ago #125346

Hey guys! So I got the information from the motor over the weekend:

The serial number is 4848941 so according to the store.oldmercs.com/category_s/2687.htm website it's a 1978 Merc 900

The other number on the head was "852-6622" What does that number mean?

Thanks!

One more question:

I have been feeding it 87 fuel. Should I use Premium instead? Would it run faster/better/smoother and start easier?

Thanks!

no it is not needed.

As Dave points out, no it is not required. For smoother running or better economy premium gas won't do jack. Just be sure the fuel is fresh and the timing is set correctly and you will be just fine.
