TOPIC: Now I know what a step dowel is...

Now I know what a step dowel is... 14 years 6 months ago #6581

Got my control cables today, got home late, had dinner and down to the shop I went to play with my new parts. Didn't look too difficult, little cotter pin through a dowel. Got the cotter pin out, but couldn't get the dowel out. Finally it went through, but as I turned it over to see how it was, I saw it took part of the throttle lever off that wasn't supposed to come off. I saw immediately what the problem was - the dowel needed to come off from the other side. Oh, so that's what a step dowel is? Whippee. :S

Anybody got a spare one of these babies they don't need? Where could I get something like this?

Thanks for any help folks. Heavens knows I need it!

That would make my day go a lot better.

Did the other side no problem, even though I had to remove the throttle handle, power cord hold down, some other gizmo, gee, pin falls right out almost when you know what side to drive it! Bah. that's okay, no more cotter pins that size in my large collection of cotter pins. Got the right size, just all about 1/4" or more too long. I'll pick up a pack of correct sized ones tomorrow.

Let me know what ya find and we'll go from there. You can email me at frank dot alguire at gmail dot com if ya want. Thanks for the help.

Frank,
I didn't realize that you had posted this request, and based on your e-mail to me, I dug one out and have it ready to mail in the morning.
I guess I need to read the forums earlier.
Oh well - no harm.
You get up way before I do so please leave me an e-mail in the AM and let me know if I should mail it or toss it back in the heaps.

Thanks Thom.

Funny thing. Did the side with power last night after the little flub up on the other side. No problems. Didn't lose the detent roller, nothing like that. What I did do was replace the cotter pin with one the same size, but steel. Didn't think anything of it till this morning. Got some stainless 1/16 X 3/4 pins at Home Depot (Lowe's didn't have them). Need to take that power side apart and get the right thing in there!

Once you get this step dowel thing down, changing cables is a piece of cake!
