TOPIC: 1963 Mercury 1000 Wiring Question

Hey guys, here is a picture. In the lower right hand corner there is something that has two wires going to the wires of the points. I was getting weak spark, then no spark, then great spark. The spark was all over the place. I checked everything, and the only thing that was left was that thing I took a picture of, I had an extra off of a parts engine and changed it, the spark issue went away. Does anybody know what it is for future reference? Thank you
