TOPIC: Timing Wheel

Timing Wheel 12 years 4 months ago #63219

I lost a lot of documents in a computer crash, including my copy of the timing wheel that one would use for setting and syncing a standard points set up for a 1963 Merc 1000. Anyone have one you can send me? e-mail in my profile.

Also - is there a tricky way to set the gap and sync without having to have to use a timing wheel and pointer? I stink at it.

I just set mine two weeks ago, used a carpenters triangle. Points open for 90 degrees, second set open at 60 degrees after first open. No gaping needed. I just had to fiddle with it a couple of times to get the right start point, which was way up the lobe, the followers don't even touch the flats of the cam.

Here's a thread with a lot of great info in it Peter, the guys were helping me try to get a '63 1000 set up right. All the points setting tips and stuff are spelled out quite clearly;

Arg! I looked briefly at that other thread last night, then sat down to read it in detail tonight and it's no longer a valid link. I searched the forus and it's not coming up. Any ideas anyone?

I don't know what happened Peter, maybe Ken can enlighten us? It says it's an "outdated bookmark" now, so maybe it got put into the archives? (It was over a year old.) I hate it, there was some good info in that thread. Hopefully it can be found again, I'll have to dig for it (AGAIN) when I have more time. (Gotta get ready for work.) :S

PS - Maybe you won't need it, see Bruce G's post on your other thread!

Edit: "Advanced Search" made it much easier, let me try this;

I have a complete original sync tool I'm willing to let someone duplicate. It also has a pointer jig that drops on the disto shaft. None of it looks very hard to duplicate. I'm sure you could rally a few people together to generate interest and pay for the materials. As long as the original is returned to me without damage.
