TOPIC: New Member and '62 1000 carb question

New Member and '62 1000 carb question 12 years 5 months ago #62246

Hi folks, I've been reading quite a bit here (for over a year) and have loved the depth of knowledge from the users. But I finally have my own question.

I have a 1962 Merc 1000 that I am rebuilding the carbs (they had fuel running out the intake while the engine ran), and I am replacing the Main Discharge Nozzle on one of them, the screwdriver slipped. The engine appears to only have 65 hours on it, and other than a repaint is in beautiful condition.

So I went to a local parts store and the new nozzle that I got is a 1/4 inch shorter than the one installed. I found this out when I got home. I am wondering if the new nozzle is mistakenly one for a post 1965 motor. The original installed nozzle is 1 3/16 inches long and the new one is 1 1/16 inches long.

Does anyone have some intimate knowledge of this aspect of the motor that they could share?

On a boat note, this being my first post, I have a 1959 Seafair Sedan and other than this pesky fuel issue, she runs great.

Joe; Just off the top of my head you're probably right about that nozzle being for a newer model . The later models used a larger(dimentionaly ) carb & there probably is a difference. What amazes me is that you found one at the local parts store. If you can't find the correct one let me know I probably have a few dozen of those around here.

Thanks for the replys guys. I'm going to take the nozzle back this afternoon and see if they have the bins crossed. As I look around at pictures of the other carbs, some of the Tillotsons have a smaller throat and this one (the KC1A) has a larger throat.

So I went to the parts store. I checked out three different nozzles. P/N 2179 seems to be the first one they gave me, it was an exact match, these were used on some of the Merc 850s. P/N 2535 is found on all the other KC series carbs (Merc 900, later 1000, and 1100), and is much larger in both diameter and length, with more threads too. And just to be sure, I had them pull a P/N 1739, used in the earlier Merc 800 and 850s, this one was more the size of the 2179.

My guess is that they have mixed up the 2179 into the 2010 bins, since he checked the 2010 and they mach the 2179s.

I'm including a picture of my nozzle (on the left) with 2179s, if you have some KC1A nozzles, give them a measure. The scale is hard to read but the long nozzles are 1 3/16 inch. The shorter are 1 1/16.

Maybe I'm the one with the odd ball parts?
