TOPIC: late 60's Merc 1000 - Can I tune it myself?

late 60's Merc 1000 - Can I tune it myself? 12 years 6 months ago #60417

I picked this up last Summer, coupled with a 1969 16' Fiberform Runabout. It runs, but occasionally is hard to start and I also get some missing when running wide open.

So, I picked up the Selco manual to see if I could give her a tune up. I figured, cap, rotor, points, condensers and plugs - pretty standard. I've rebuilt car engines, so I'm capable of mechanics, but I have zero boat experience, and zero two-stoke experience.

The description of synchronizing the ignition and carbs looks a tad bit daunting. I've worked with points before on four-stroke cars, but have had bad luck with old motorcycle engines.

So, two questions:
1. How difficult is it for a boat newbie to complete a good tune up?
2. OR - Does anyone know of a good mechanic in the Portland area for old Mercs?

Thanks,

Glen

Try just cleaning the distributer cap and change the plugs.

I noticed a small crack on the outside of the distributor cap, so I assume it's safe to assume it needs to be replaced. So, I'll try cap, rotor and plugs, leaving points for now I guess.

Thanks

show us a pic of the crack and cap. rotor do not replace if it is an electronic ignition. what year is the motor.

I think the motor is right around the same year as the boat, so 68 or 69. It does not have electronic ignition - two sets of points.

I'll take a pic when I'm home. the crack is visible from the outside (the cap is still installed).

Be careful on what you WANT/NEED to replace. Parts are available but may cost you your first born child.
