TOPIC: Mercury 110 9.8 HP - 1971 - Won't Start

I have a merc 110 9.8 and can not get it to go.
So far:
1. I have some spark (I took it to a dealer and he indicated that it was not strong enough and needed a stator)
2. I got a new stator (was not cheap)
3. Still won't go

Cleaned the points

Cleaned and new seats in carb

Any suggestions?

I was also wondering what is the correct point gap

I found this on another forum where a guy had a similar motor with weak spark issues.

That model has 2 white plastic insulating blocks that the points wire goes through at the bolt.These crack and can be very hard to see the cracks.(shows up more like carbon tracks)The voltage will track to ground from these, I would advise you to replace these anyway.Have seen alot of guys change stators and the only problem was the blocks.

I agree, most of the time the issues with that engine is the blocks, very common. I always use the choke to stop the engine on that model, the stop switch breaks the ground to the stator which can damage it from a voltage spike. Stators for those are worth a fortune at a Merc dealer.

Tim, I replaced the insulating blocks and I no improvement. I have a spare coil and this works in both locations. I have another on order. I think I replaced almost everything on the ignition system. I may have had a multiple of issues.
