TOPIC: Oil from Exhaust

Oil from Exhaust 12 years 8 months ago #57760

I have a 1977 Mercury 9.9 Thunderbolt that is leaking oil from the exhaust. Not a lot, but enough to drip down the shaft housing. It gets great gas milage, runs well, the carb was cleaned and rebuilt last year. This is my first year with this motor, and am wondering if this is normal/ maybe too much oil maybe? We are running 50:1, as that is our understanding of the ratio.
I'm very happy with the gas mileage- ran itfor 9 hours straight last year, 40 miles, and used 4 gallons of gas. It's the slight sheen on the water I'm trying to avoid.....

Suggestions anybody?

if you dont want a oil sheen on the water from a two stroke you will need a four stroke .

All two strokes will dump some oil through there exhaust, unburnt part of mixture gets sent out the exhaust. That, being the oil as the gas is completly ignited. You can lean it out with a smaller main jet to minimize the residue, the negative part being a possible scored cylinder in the making or seizing up if she is too lean.Changing the oil mixture will not change the residue output. Your observation is why 2 strokes are getting banned on lakes as well as some parks not letting 2 smoke snowmobiles in.I would keep doing what you have been doing in the past,50:1, or dump 4-6 Gs on a new 4 stroke. Some of the newer oils may not spew as much but they still spew, what are you using oil wise?

I use Pennzoil full synthetic in all of my motors. About $27 a gallon at Menards, and best of all, its 100% biodegradable!!! Makes the tree huggers quiet, smokes less, and I believe it helps keep the exhaust ports and rings cleaner.

I use the Penzoil synthetic as well. Same results as noted above. Much prefer it to actual oil.
