TOPIC: 1958 Mercury AEL

1958 Mercury AEL 12 years 8 months ago #54538

I picked up a 45HP Mercury 1958 AEL with a late 60's 12' starcraft recently. The boat is pretty haggard and the Motor turns over but has not been started in who knows how long. I don't have the time or energy to get them up and running on my own so my question is what do you all think this setup is worth. I could just as soon junk the boat but I think the engine is pretty cool and may be worth something... thoughts?

I'm sure someone can give you an idea of the value better than I can. How is the cosmetic condition, and does it have the controls and harness with it? Those items would help the value.

Also, if it's an "A," I think that signifies it's an anniversary edition, which would make it a '59 versus a '58 (Mercury's 20th anniversary was 1959). You probably already know this, but I believe the "E" means electric starting, and the "L" is for long shaft.

when i researched it the A was for alternator, and based on the stamping it is a 58 and yes it had everything but the key for the ignition but i figured anything from 58 with a stater and alternator had to be pretty swanky for a 58 outboard

You should post a for sale in the classifieds in this site, the Mercury 45HP is one of the more popular choices for vintage Mercury

although most of the older boats we play with want short shaft motors, there are some that need longshaft and there arent as many 59A's in the longshaft version some one here may need a LS

If none one wants it it will definitely part out on ebay, Ill buy the lower unit :woohoo:

merc id codes
A 1959 aniversery
E full electric start and charging
S electric starter only no charge.
L longshaft.
almost all up to 1965 had reciol starters on them.
Hope this helps with the confusion.
