Look past the crappy appearance, in the process of stripping the paint. Is there supposed to be some type of screen over the hole for the water inlet. The po had what looked like a shower drain stuck on with silly cone.

That probably was the original strainer although it should have a tab that anchors under the nut nearby. or has tabs that get bent over from the inside

Is this a joke you guys are playing on me? I'll use it but thinking of another way to attach it. Maybe tapping a small hole in the area somewhere and putting in a short screw.

Nope, they're telling the truth! It was originally held in place by tabs. You'll see the slots for the tabs once you clean up the area around the hole...

Here is my Mark 35A water pick up/ screen held on with two tabs that are twisted to tighten up top.

You're right, found the slots. The tabs are missing from the shower drain. Are they still available? I'll check ebay.
