Well I made a 13 hour round trip run yesterday to pick up a 1972 1150 short shaft in Wisconsin. Kinda unique engine for the fact its the only 1150 short made in blue. After 1972 there was never a 1150 short made again. And all previous shorts were red band montors. And 1972 is the last year Kiekhaefer is found on the motor faceplate.

BUT once I show up to pick up the motor I notice the serial numbers do not match and they DSH number only matches a 1500.

The carbs say WMK and the I pulled a trans cover and there were power port pistons in her.

WTH?? Its a 1973 1500 powerhead on a 1974 1500 short shaft mid.

Not what I was after but its a lot better :)

Thats the 2nd 1150 I have purched this year that turned out to be a 1500.

My Subie Outback gets 30 MPG @ 65 mph and can fit two big sixes in her. I can really run a long ways to get motors for not much gas money. :) My old suburban got 12 mpg.

Man! It must be nice having access to all those fresh-water-run motors instead of a lot of Salty Dogs!

Xclnt find on another 1500. I see it's got an extension housing, guess you'll have to pull the lower unit to see if it's a longshaft or a Shortie with shaft extension.

If you find a stub shaft with Shortie driveshaft, the Longshaft kit would probably be a good money-maker on eBay.

Looks like Santa hooked you up with an early Christmas Present!

Cheers..........ed

Thanks Ed. I actually have 4 of these extension kits and two complete with stub shafts. But do you think I can find those stub shafts!!! I put them somewhere safe enough that I cannot locate them :)

Nice find Conrad, I drove to Chicago from London Ontario to pick up my 1500 block. They are getting a little harder to find around here.

Nice score.
For Dave: there is a guy in WI that will port 1150 to 1500 specs including the "gouge port" as he calls it. He worked at Merc for most of his life part of which was spent with Merc racing. He has the equipment, know how and specifications ot convert. I have him do my bore and hone on my blocks, name escapes me now.,..GRRRR.

Nice little Christmas surprise Conrad.
I am still looking for my first 1500.
You are gathering a pile of them.

Thanks Randy and Conrad. I am fortunate to have access to a full machine shop locally. The owner and I hit it off and last year I personally bored all six jugs on my 1500 and machined the top of the block to match up with an ADI front cover. He has an old Bridgeport milling machine with a 5 inch automatic travel J head. He never uses it. I cleaned up the machine for him and took apart the milling head to fix a sticky spot. The quill had a catch in it from a "dent" in the surface. We spun it up on the lathe and cleaned it up. After reassembly and adjustment (I found a manual for the machine for him) the 1964 machine worked like new. I spent a week there setting up the machine, setting up the block on the machine, and boring the six jugs .030 over. I had a ball. When I was done I asked him what I owed him. $20 bucks for hydro!! :)
