I just bought two old Mercurys: a 500 that runs great but looks like hell and a 350 that looks ok but doesn't run...$200 for both. I figure I did ok on the cost but I'd like to know how to date them. Also, I think a lot of the parts interchange...am I right? Thanks

If you have the serial numbers, here's one of the best references around for id;

Parts interchanges will have to come from the "guru's" here.

Yep, serial numbers are a must, then use one of the online guides to cross reference to the year.

As for compatibility, year for year, the 35 twins and the 50 fours share lower unit stuff, but not much else. Mercury was fond of making minute changes from year to year, so that lower units that look similar but are several years apart don't swap without modifications...

Thanks for the advice. I'll track down the serial numbers and do some research. By the way, I also got all the controls with the 500 and a vintage Kiekhaefer Mercury cast iron engine stand on wheels. Maybe I'll restore it!

Two motors, one running, and a K. stand for $200.
That is a real good deal.

When I first came onto FG someone here told me "you date a stern drive, you marry an outboard".
I took it to heart, so far I have "married" 27 of them. ;)

Yeah...I suppose it was a hell of a deal. My thing is inboards...flatheads, V8s and diesels. I know nothing about outboards except that I need one for my del Mar. I also got a Merc 350 and a cute little Johnson 5.5 (photo below). The guy also wanted me to take something called a Lark, an old beat-up Evinrude and a tiny little thing called a Wizard. I could have had them too but I have no use for them. Are those engines worth fooling with?
