TOPIC: Antique Mercury 850 25th Yr Anv Lower End

Antique Mercury 850 25th Yr Anv Lower End 13 years 3 months ago #40632

We purchased a 14' Larson 1961 a few years ago, it came with a Merc-850 25th Anniversary edition black motor. (still not exactly what year it is) It was running great, our best guess is that it is a '64.

Now the lower end must be replaced, are lower ends specific by year, or can other years be used? I came across a blog referring to an upgrade super speedmaster conversion, is that advisable? is there an aftermarket manufacturer available, how does one come to find this part specifically?

Thanks in advance for helping this newbe,
Will

Welcome Will. If you will take your serial number off the motor, you can reference the exact year on the link below. I'm sure some of the experts here can help you out with the other questions;

the 25th year would make it a 64 model.
Speedmaster lower units are only for very fast boats.

Thank you! So, I'll stay away form the racing lower unit, but could you tell me if any other year is exchangeable for my lower unit? I'm not sure if I'l be able to find the parts I need. I'm accessing the parts situation before dismantling the engine, I'm not sure if my problem lies here or the main engine.

-Thanks allot, I would love to save this engine, my wife is not so sure - she is afraid its going to be a huge expense. Are antique merc motors a passion or a decent return for your investment?

-Thank you,
W

You will likely not make any money working on old MERCS in order to sell them.
Not many people want this old stuff , and are afraid of a motor that most shops will not touch.
They are great motors , but only when you can work on them yourself.
Check ---E-Bay for parts , lots available.
