TOPIC: How did merc make a 1400 1500?

How did merc make a 1400 1500? 13 years 3 months ago #38529

Carb #s are different, but what I wonder is if the powerhead changed, or if it was just bigger carbs?

Depends on the 1400. The 1972 1400 was mostly the same except it did not have the power ported block. It was the first motor to use the newer style midsection. 1973 the 1500 came out and had the power porting.

The later 1400 like my 1980 is the same but low dome pistons and ADI ignition. Im currently swapping low dome for high domes in it to make it the same as the 1500.

What is a power ported block Conrad? And what you're saying is that your 1980 1400 has the same power porting as the '73 1500?

The power port blocks have a scalloped channel/groove in the cyl wall to let more fuel/air mix flow to the cyl. These groves line up with that hole in the piston you might be usta seeing. My avatar with the crank and pistons shows that hole. The power port pistons can be used in the older blocks but the advantage is lost if the block is not set up for them.

I believe in 1978ish the 1500 stopped and the 150 V-6 came out. That is when the NEW 1400 came about. It was a slight ly de-tuned version of the 1500 so it was not confused with the power the new v-6's were producing.

Add high dome pistons if you have light enough boat to utilize the mild hp increase they produce. Or just leave them low dome and have fun too. Any 99 cube block will run circles around your 1000. If you had a standard 1400 on it it would be night and day difference. Trust me. Ive ran a 89, 93 and two 99 cube blocks on my Carlson and they all had noticable HP increases.
