TOPIC: In-line 6's

In-line 6's 12 years 11 months ago #38196

Can a '63 1000 be made into a 1500 by bolting on a powerhead? I don't imagine it that's simple, but don't know. Thanks for any help!

nope sorry. They are 2 different animals. For you motor Frank after 1964 the exhaust was different where the bottom of the block mates with the intermediate housing. If you had a 1965 Merc 1000 you could put different heads on up to (someone correct me if I am wrong) 1150 and maybe the 1350 but if I remember the 1350 block even changed a bit on the bolt pattern.
Would ya like a wee bit more Horsepower for the Power Cat Frank? Wouldya?

Jim is right on. 1965-1971 powerheads mostly interchange. some came with two extra small bolts at the back of the block making 10 bolts total. and some just had 8 main bolts. If your mid only has 8 bolts and your powerhead had 10 you could pull the back 2 small studs off the powerhead and make it work. They all had basically the same footprint. The intermediate plate and tuner can possibly have some differences but very little. The 1350 had a tiny exhaust splitter bolted into the top of the exhaust tuner tube. Sort of a try at what they did in 1973 with the split exhaust. 1972 was a transitional year, I believe the 1400 had the new mid but did not have the power ported block yet. 1973 power ported and split exhaust mid with 8 bolts was standard. This was a new 8 bolt pattern that can not be used on the older motors.

So find a 1350 and there are a ton of short shafts out there to build off of. 1500's are harder to find and build as Jim and I know :) Have not forgot about ya Jim :)

Thanks for the info guys. This would be a standard 20" shaft, not a short shaft. And yes Jim, I would like a little more power for the reason Ron suggests, but I have an ulterior motive as well. I don 't have a lot of cash, but would love to trade an exceptionally well running AND pretty 1963 1000 for something that runs and would get me closer...

I see 20 inch 1500's complete go for pretty short cash quite a bit on craigs list.

Well Jim, we'll see. Broke after vacation, and may be for a while. Have to work with what I got. Least I got a little travel trailer now, so vacation is cheaper for longer stays.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to have a job, but no raises whatever the last 3 years and we're told none for the next two as well. I'm concentrating on stuff other than the boat unfortunately.

I need to get back to work on that old Holsclaw trailer and see if I can peddle that.

Thanks man,

Frank
