I lost my impeller key and ordered a new one. The 1 I rec'd is the same that was on my MK78 where it goes on flat spot of shaft. My 58 doesn't have a flat spot and am wondering if that's correct. Supplier doesn't think I have correct l/u? I have no clue!!! Seems to me I might have had a smaller key when I put it where I wouldn't lose it!!!

Joe not to overstate the obvious ...but did you remove the stainless waterpump plate...it just lays in pace & clocked by a notch

the flat spot on the shaft and impeller reside under that stainless plate....

in the pics the plate is in place

There is no such thing as stating the obvious when it comes to me and outboards!!!!! It's been so long since I took it apart I forgot and it's obvious now!!LOL Now where do you get all the fingers to bend the impeller to get it in??? Thx, Joe

Joe

Place gearfoot in vice at 45 degree angle grease the flat spot on the drive shaft and place the key in place

the piece gray PVC electrical conduit is the flared end and the ID is 1 5/8" (anything with a 1 5/8" inside dia will work) I use this to keep the impeller blades compressed to fit in the cartridge

get a hose clamp to compress the impeller.... place the compressed impeller over the PVC electrical conduit and with your fingers push the impeller into the PVC electrical conduit I spray WD40 on both pieces to slide easier....now mark the position of the keyway on the PVC electrical conduit to clock it

now slide the loaded PVC electrical conduit with the impeller down the driveshaft...and clock the the keyway mark to 12:00 to match the key laying on the shaft

now use the second pipe (PVC water pipe works fine)down the drive shaft as shown and with a quick sharp blow drive the impeller into position in the cartridge
