I picked up a 500 shorty today. Controls and keys. Parts motor.
Broken crankshaft. Lots of good parts. Pics tomorrow.

where id it break the crank? I usually only hear of 6's snapping cranks.

Thanks Scott. I will keep it in mind. I am getting so many motors though, I don't know when I will get to this one.
Conrad, I thought that the flywheel was loose at first. You can rock the flywheel back and forth until it hits the stator and the crank nut and the end of the crank move with it. I think it is either a broken crank or a major top bearing failure. The first thing I will do is pull the flywheel and take a look. I really don't want to tear into this one right yet.
I bought it for $50 and the controls and key came with it. It is a shorty, so I didn't get hurt parts wise.

They most surely do break. This one came out of a '76 I picked up last year for parts. Almost rebuilt it, but two days after I got it, a neighbor with a '79 offered me stupid money to replace the lower unit his son wiped out on a shoal...
