i might be getting a longshaft 1978 175 hp merc, is it safe to lift them using the lifting ring that threads into the flywheel? about how much do they weigh?

I don't know how much they weigh, but if you can get a lift ring for it, and it threads in most the way or all, I wouldn't worry about it. Those lift rings are real heavy duty!

They weigh about 350lbs, as a long shaft with power trim.
If you have a properly manufactured and installed lifting ring, the center flywheel will hold it as Frank mentioned. |

Someone mentioned this website on the forum before for a lifting eye/puller. It's the best $32 I spent for working on Merc's. I ordered one and got it in the mail 2 days later! |

Now that's a nifty idea! Add a 175 horse outboard to your lifting ring as an accessory! I need to talk to the wife, er, Minister of Finance, about that...
