Guys
Seriel # says this is a 1970.
Is 70 and 71 the only two years for the 1350?
Any thing in particular special or different with these?

Hi Neil, yup just two years. The exhaust portion of the block is different(oval)than the later inlines so the powerhead is not interchangeable outside the 70, 71,72 era. The 1150 shares the same design in 72/

Well guys, I just got off the phone with the guy.
He said that he was just going to junk the boat if I did not buy it.
I told him that I would take it if he was just going to junk it out.
Looks like I just got a 1350 and a boat for $200.
And the hits just keep on coming! :)

I always thought 1965-1971 mids were interchangeable? Ive got several up on top of the garage, Ill have to look at today.

The 1350 is the first direct charge motor. It has the newer style piston design. Only without the power port.

The 1350 had a small exhaust baffle added to the exhaust tube to split the exhaust as it entered the tube.

The 1350 is the only motor that came with a tall 1.78 gear ratio from factory. The rest of the inlines have a standard 2-1 lower unit.

The 1250 shares the same design in 72

1250 was 1968-69

Thats all I can think of right now

Well guys, I drug it home this morning.
It is a 16'.
Plate says Sunset Boat Co. Silverton, Ore. then the seriel.
As far as finding these deals, well, I just drive every alley and backstreet and knock on alot of doors and talk to alot of people.
I will get the compression test done this weekend.

The boat? Well I have a long shaft 650 that needs a test rip.
Gonna shoot for the 4th of July weekend. My friend has a 17 foot Reinell that I need to show my transom to and I told him I wouldn't need one of my "Big Block Mercs" to get that done.

Nice looking rig!!!! one note tho. From 1965 and newer that lower cowling is free floating and is held on by rubber mounts at the top of the motor. Lifting on the lower cowl can be a problem. (ive done it too :O ) But the safest way is to lift them via the flywheel. You can tear your rubber mounts up lifting it like that.

That is yet another awesome deal Neil. I am in the heart of boat country with both Lake Ontario and all of the Finger Lakes around here and risk my life all the time by looking in back yards while driving all the roads around here but never seem to see "finds" on the road. I have only had decent success by watching CL religiously and being the first to contact when a beauty comes along.

I live here in central Idaho and there are alot of aluminum fishing boats and Fishing/jet boats.
There are the occasional older fiberglass runabouts. They have a smell about them and I drive with the window down.LOL There isn't much for the 50's finned boats though. Bummer Or I would have them too.
And finding the old Mercs, well, I just look for black or white outboards hangin' on transoms. I do love the hunt.
Short story on this last one goes a little like this, condensed for your reading pleasure; Landlord, tennant, tennant moves, abandoned boat,landlord does not want boat, Neil drives by, landlord going to Vegas to daughters wedding, Neil tows boat home grinning.

Funny thing is that I was always an OMC guy having grown up learning to first ski behind my dads cedar strip boat with a "red" Johnson 10 hp...yea I was small and young. Then later he swapped it out for a "green" 25 Johnson and then we were flying on the old planks. Fast forward to later teenage and my dad got a nice aluminum Springbok(we were in Canada) 16' with a nice Johnson 50 that seemed to fly way down the lake to the bay we fished in.

But ever since I found an old 60's little Boston Whaler that I restored and then found a 60 Merc 300 in a barn and woke it up and the found my baby ... a mid fifties cold molded mahogany ply runabout ...all original with a nice red/white Mark 55... I have been a Merc convert and big fan since. Found and restored several others since and the inlines sure work nice when tweaked.

So...after that diatribe.... needless to say I am in complete envy of not only your great collection but also of your shop set-up. I do not have that luxury but maybe some day?

My dream is to someday have a nice big heated building with lots of room for several boats, tools, and of course motors. For now I just stay above water every year by finding and restoring and selling boats and motors and trailers destined for death and try very hard not to dwell on the nice things I have resurected and then let go,

I guess I can just think of it as I am a saviour of the nice older boating gear that saved them from the scrap heap returning these things back to the water creating fun and memories as they were intended.

Tim, I was bit by the bug only four years ago. A co-worker has a boat (1970 Reinell 165 Mercruiser i/o), he uses it for fishing and skiing and he invited me and my wife to the lake and we were hooked.
Our first purchase was a Sleekcraft Jr. Executive. 23 foot daycruiser 460 Ford/Panther jet pump. This is the worst combination in a fiberglass boat for a lake. Fuel consumption was measured in gallons per minute. It has two 25 gallon tanks and that summer gas was $4.00+ a gallon. Ouch.
Then I saw a Merc Tower. And historically I am one to go overboard on everything, I can't get just one or two, I gotta have em all.
First it was old Ford Galaxies, then motorcycles, then Audi's, then guns, now boats and Mercurys.
My wife is waiting for me to start collecting 100 dollar bills!
Fortunately, we both have good jobs, healthly grown kids, and still the dreams of our youth.
We waited long to become DINKs again. (Dual Income,No Kids) ;)
So for now I am with you, I just keep finding and fixing.

"The 1250 shares the same design in 72" is a mis-quote in that Daveswaves was referencing the first edition 1150 - not the earlier 1250.
The early 1150 block is identical to the 1350, both having the same split exhaust too. The early 1150 was simply a 'choked down' 1350.
It only used .066 main jets compared to the 1350's .0785 main jets.
It had much shallower reed stops than the 'wide open' reed stops in the 1350.
The last of the 1350s had a little extra "tail" off every two exhaust ports on the inner water jacket to baffle plate "S" divider as well.
It is very easy to upgrade an early 1150 to a 1350 during a rebuild and if you ran the 1150 prior to the conversions you will really be able to feel the difference.
