The thing is so old it is shiny and cracked. it is only a matter of time before it breaks.
I see that I need to take off the flywheel but if that happens easily with a puller, is there any other problems I need to pay attention to? I shouldn't have to time it if I can slip the new one in the same spot should I?

Find and line up the timing marks before you lift the belt off the distributor.
Then pull the flywheel.
Install the new belt with the timing marks lined up again.
The dots are on the flywheel and the arrow is on the distributor pulley ( under the top plate )

Just in case as I've seen a lot of people get it wrong. To pull the Merc flywhel off you DO NOT unbolt the circle of bolts on the flywheel top, you undo the large nut on the crankshaft located in the recessed hole in the center of the flywheel. Merc then makes a special puller that threads into the hole and has a center bolt that will tighten against the crank to pull the flywheel.
Don't want to insult your knowlege if you knew this already but, better safe than sorry.
