TOPIC: Rat Rod Merc

I decided to try using the paint designed for BBQ housings.
It is good to very high temperatures so I'm hoping that it will resist gasoline drips, etc too. (you're right - I don't know squat about paint)
Anyway,...I heated the block to 120 degrees after thoroughly cleaning it, and then sprayed on the black paint.
Then I used momma's blow dryer to keep the paint and block up around 120 +/- for about (15) minutes.
The paint laid out real nice.
It is flat black - not gloss black so I decided I'd call it my 'Rat-Rod 800'.
It is supposed to be silver or aluminum colored as it is a '70 800 4 cylinder, but what the heck.
It is all rebuilt, bored, re-machined water-jackets, the works.
It sure is getting expensive to rebuild these things.
I spend right around $800 in machine work & parts.
Tomorrow I will rebuild the starter.
Then I'll start the digging for inner cowl supports, lower pan, internal harness, a driveshaft housing and correct exhaust extension plate, and dig out another 2.31 to make it all complete.
I'll bet that with a new paint job and decals I'll have around $1400 in this one.
The sun is out so hopefully someone will 'have to have it' as soon as I get it finished.
I think I'll do Headley's Mark 25 next.

Looks good Thom. I have had good success with spray engine enamel too. It is designed to resist fuel and oil and is glossy. It has a ceramic component to it so chips easily so not so good for cowls etc. But sure goes on a block nicely. Comes in black red orange and blue.
