Hi All,
I am trying to get the Ride Guide steering wheel off of my Crosby so that I ca get it painted and also paint the dash and deck while its off. There are 2 what may be hollow threaded tubes about 1/2" in diameter that come through the dash and tie in to a yoke of some sort that is attached to what I think is a rack and pinion housing out of which comes the steering cable. There is also a single through bolt above everything else that is indeed just a through bolt with a nut an washer on it. Are these 3 things going through the dashboard what I need to be working with inorder to get the wheel off and if so is there a certain order or procedure that I need to follow? Thanks.

Re:Taking the steering wheel off 13 years 6 months ago #32576

remove this nut attached to the long bolt that goes thru the wheel and rack & pinion assembly then lift up on the wheel, it and the bolt will come out

I dont have that exact wheel but the other 2 ride guide rack and pinion I have are the same setup....should be able to remove the emblem to remove the bolt IF necessary...maybe better to leave the emblem alone!!! and becareful of the bolt busting the emblem out while your painting the wheel

Many thanks. So just by looking at the pix the rack and pinion unit stays put and the wheel lifts and backs out. Correct?

MadProps, that couldn't have been any simpler. Thanks. Given that the emblem is glued on does that mean that the shaft travels with the wheel to the paint shop? Also does anyone have a line on quicksilver decals? There is a small one at the top of the wheel that will most likely get trashed when I soda blast the wheel. Again, thanks.

go with my previous suggestion....you wont find that emblem easily
show me a closeup of the decal, we can usually reproduce them digitally

my quicksilver wheels are cast & raised then painted on the wheel. I havent seen the decal

Not alot to see except a boat with no motor, no windshield, no hardware, no steering, no controls, no battery, no gas tank and no water. But I can assure you there is promise. I'm shooting for September to get her somewhat put back together to get in the water but in the meantime I've got a pretty big learning curve to get over, namely gel coat repairs and due to the lack of a decent place to spray I need to learn about "tip and roll?". I keep posting pix as I go along. I'm trying something different so hopefully more than one pic will come through on this post. Wish me luck. Thanks.

Thank you Mark. As I said September is my goal. I have most of the original hardware replaced although I'm keeping the hardware that came with it. I've got a Merc 58A on the hook that I hope to get back in August and I've got a line on sand-blasting the trailer. It might be a pipe dream to think that I'll get the topsides repainted this year but I'm gonna try. I think I have the picture posting down so I will keep them coming as things get done. Again, thanks.

Re:Taking the steering wheel off 13 years 6 months ago #32642

Shipster,
I have the same wheel on my G3 that I just had powder coated. I found a new center medallion from Joe Poole, not sure if he has access to more or not:

Joe Poole, Jr.
Ferguson-Poole, Inc. (Marine Sales & Service since 1951)
(770) 597-5992 Cell
www.fergusonpoolemarine.com/

I have tried for several months to find the Quicksilver decal, with no joy. If you find a source keep me in mind!

Madprops... you mentioned somewhere to have them made? Please tell us!
BTW... be very careful of that bolt slipping out into the back of the plastic emblem. It is just a sliding fit in a hex hole.

If one of you can scan the decal...place the wheel on a scanner bed with a white towel over the wheel & scanner , & get me the exact outside dimensions of the decal, I will digitally reproduce the logo to be printed on waterslide decal or clear vinyl stickers

It appears that there is a "K" in the middle of the "Q"

Madprops... no kidding!

I can do better than that. I can create a vector image in the exact layout... and provide it to you in whatever file format you like!

I think a vinyl decal would be preferred.

And,...If you guys get an image Perfecto-Mundo and want it on a chrome back ground like the Merc cowling decals and don't have that ability Peter at nymarine.ca has been GREAT about working with guys with special requests.
I know that Dean's guy can make the decals chrome in appearance, but not sure about use of a chrome base vinyl.

Here's what you might try to eliminate the bolt breaking the emblem. I slipped a short piece of pipe over the attachment bolt and then put the washer and nut back on and snugged them up. It should pass the sniff test.

Re:Taking the steering wheel off 13 years 5 months ago #32668

Dr... My decal guy took a look at it, but he didnt think his process would handle the fine lettering well... so he passed on it. It will take me a few days, but I can create the artwork for the wheel decal, based on the photos and steering wheel i have... pretty tight tolerances as it drops into a relatively small recessed machined area. :(

Re:Taking the steering wheel off 13 years 5 months ago #33076

Shipster,

I created the Quicksilver logo for the Ride Guide wheel. I have found a decal place that is creating decals for my white wheel. Once I get them I will post again to show how they came out.

If they work out and if you still want one in your colors, I can modify my file in the colors you need and you can order your decal.

Shipster,

I just got the first set of decals... they turned out great, but they didnt get the size right. I ordered them at 3.12" wide, but they came 3.5". The company is redoing them. I will keep you posted, once I get mine scaled right, I will let you know.

Re:Taking the steering wheel off 13 years 5 months ago #34489

Shipster,

Still waiting for the resized decals in white. Tonight I had a play with coloring the artwork for your decal. I took your images that you uploaded before and snagged the colors from the photo and this is what I came up with. Not sure if the red is really what you want... its kinda faded on the photo (it seems).

One other thing... the K in the center of the Q doesnt have much contrast on your decal, can hardly see it. So I tried more of a maroon color. Anyway, tell me what you want to do with the colors... if you have a color you selected for the wheel paint, if you have an online color swatch I could try to match.... that would be helpful.

Shipster,

My Quicksilver decals arrived... they came out great. I actually ordered them from two independent places, and the quality was about equivilent. Just let me know if you want any help with this... you can email me.
