When I look at some outboard rigs with beefy engines for racing and high speed runs, I'm surprised by the size of the engines and horsepower they have in them. But then I look at the weight of the engines, and it looks like the older classic engines have a better weight to HP ratio.

For example, lets say I found another 75 Merc 1500. They weigh about 275 pounds. Thats 550 pounds of engine and 300HP.

Compare that to a 635 pound Verado Pro Fourstroke 300.

Plus, the force gets spread out over the transom?

Yes, the linkages would be more complex, and dual throttle controls would be needed. BUT! A pair of 1500's or even 850-1150 would cost less than a brand new motor.... :ohmy:

I totally agree with your logic,...BUT
I think that Shell Oil Company would really appreciate the thirsty twin 2 strokes.
Personally - I would run (2) 1500 Stack-6s compared to a new 4 stroke any day.
Primarily because I already have 'more than 2' 1500s and can't even think of affording the purchase of a fancy new 4 stroke.

You have to re figure it all

Running twins will not increase your top speed much at all. It really does is increase your torque; as for you to get on top faster and carry larger loads
