TOPIC: merc 800 year needed

just picked up a merc 80 hp and would like to know what year it is. the ser # is 2784520. it has no spark ( seems like i get stuck with no spark mercs ) was told it needed a part that costs 400.00. maybe i'll parts it out. but still need to know the year. thanks. frog

Frog,
It is a solid state ignition.
You have three possible culprits in a no spark situation.
A dead trigger (distributor)
A dead switchbox or
A dead coil.
Have you tested and identified which part is at fault?
I have used ones of all three components.
Please write direct if interested in parts.
If you need assistance testing the components please post and someone will assist.
