Trying to remove l/u on my 58A and it's not coming off. removed 2 nuts on sides and 1 by intake. No bolt or allen bolt in rear. I have it in neutral and it's dropped 1/4 to 1/2" and no further. Tapped with board and still not coming off.

if you have dropped it 1/2 you have all the boltsout so cut some wood wedges and work it out

OK that didn't work. It seems the aft end wants to come out but the fwd end doesn't. Also looking from aft the right bolt has a screw just forward of that which isn't there on my 78. its not the flush, drain or vent scew.

Re:HELP!!! 13 years 1 month ago #31824

sounds like the shift rod is rusted in place, its in the forward part of the leg

can you see enough of it to squirt penetrating oil in there

the way that shift rod is setup male/female ends it would work best if you turned the motor up on end so the penetrating oil runs into the coupling part of the shift rod

Joe

first pic shows the top and bottom shift rods coupled together as it lokks if inside the DSH "drive shaft housing"

next pic shows the 2 reverse lockout cams the bottom one is splined and the one you will be able to see and need to heat if you cant see the shift rod

last pic shows the splined bottom shift rod....while were here....if you have a problem with your motor not locking in reverse in kicking up
for a quick fix that works well place a stainless washer where shown in the pic, this will increase the travel of the lock out rod and give you positive engagement

get to the coupling by aiming the flame down thru the opening in the front of the midsection.

Thx guys, I don't have a torch, which is probably a good thing, but it would come in handy. I'm going to get back at it later today. Have to run errands and hopefully take my Owens to my merc guy and see what's going on with that and get more paint and finish the Invader bottom.

If you're gonna spend time on old Mercs you MUST have a propane torch in your toolbox! Mercury was real big on press fit bearings, covers, caps, etc. Heat helps all!!

You can't use those little bottle ones, can you?

Been running around all day. Went to see my upholstery guy to see if he could match my paint. Then off to west marine to pick up a few things, then Lowes for sand paper and some mix buckets and finally went to tractor supply for another chain fall. Talked to my merc guy and going to drag it over there fri. Then of course I just get home a few minutes ago and get comfortable only to realize I forgot penetrating oil. Oh yea I also went to the Habitat re-store and picked up a couple of wall cabinets to hang in the garage. Hell I'm worn out thinkin' about it!!!

OK Went out and soaked it and no budging. Got one of those burnomatics and heated the cams from the gap and shot heat down top of mid, more penetrating spray. Beat it with 2X6 and then impact chiseled the cams, no luck. Tried to pull power head and same thing, hanging up on shift rod,,, I'm ready fo BFH and chisel or cutting wheel on rod at top of mid,, Gave it up and put another coat on the bottom of boat and now chillin in the ac

Re:HELP!!! 13 years 1 month ago #31971

you can see by the pics the penetrating oil will go in the coupling best if upside down
right side up it wont get in where needed, unless you have clear access to it and can shoot fluid under pressure

lift straight up, it will slide out, but not till you break the rust on the coupling down below

It's a gone pecan!!! Just hacksawed it and plumped right out seems to be the lock out rod to keep from jumping and the other one is the one that goes to the lower cowl, That's still stuck in mid, might have to cut it too to get the shifter out from the cowl.

Oh dear. You have cut the shift shaft off where it exits the L/U, I am fairly certain you will have to strip the L/U down now to replace it.
